I have some Valvoline Euro but it only mentions 50200/50500

I use Valvoline Synpower 5W-30 XL-III here in Oz, it's DPF safe etc. Used it at one of the workshops I used to work at too

Penrite Enviro + 5W-30 is stated by Penrite to match the 504/507 spec

The 'weight' doesn't tell the whole story when comparing 505 and 507 oils.

The 507 is made from better (higher viscosity index) feedstocks than the 505 oils, and at high temperatures a 507 oil will actually be more viscous than a 505 despite the lower weight rating, while still offering better cold flow for quicker oil pressure on cold starts and better fuel economy. There is no reason to use a heavier oil, even in extreme heat.

Ok, so no 5W40 oil has the 507 spec. Did VW make the suggestion for it's use before that weight was even available? That's odd. The cheapest readily available oil I see is Robot or human? at $28 a jug. So with filter, that's a $68 DIY oil change. What do dealers charge?
It varies. I pay $150 for my oil change at my dealer.

The spec is so specific that all of the 507 oils are essentially identical, regardless of the brand or viscosity specs... anything you can find will work. Usually M1 ESP is the only thing I can find at local stores that I don't have to get shipped.

I never noticed that the Owner's Manual mentions 5W40 as an option before. Interesting that the manual says to use 5W30 or 5W40, but then also states that you should only use a 504 or 507-spec oil which is only available for 30-weight oils. Talk about a contradiction, I now understand why the OP was asking this question. Today I learned something new!

Note that they're saying that's what they put in there at the factory, not what they are telling you to use. It's still saying you can use any oil that meets the 507 spec.

I would guess that the 5W-40 in the manual is simply a mistake, because VW does not appear to sell, or have ever sold a 507 oil with that rating.

Mmm Castrol sludge yummy...

Why not use Valvoline or Liqui Moly (albeit the latter seems overrated)?

Cars driven short distances using synthetic oil in areas with high olefinic content in premium unlead fuel are a known mousse / sludge problem. The short distance driving does not enable the engine to evaporate the fuel and water build up in the the oil and this reacts more with synthetic oils than conventional mineral oils to form mousse and sludge. Not an issue with the brand off oil itself. It was first recognised in a problem with Mercedes only driving the few kms from Toorak ( an up market suburb) to Melbourne daily

Thanks, didn't know that. As I said this is based off what we used at my old work, they always used Valvoline. Maybe because he had a trade deal with them or something. All I know is I use Valvoline and am happy with it

Just did some research, turns out a lot of the negative opinions were from the early days of their synthetic oils but they seem highly rated now. I stand corrected
