Hi I've not long bought my Touareg so don't know much about them.
I've just done 250miles round trip towing s caravan with no problems but after I parked the caravan up and went home, as I was turning around on my drive on full lock the wheels were locking up and skipping and the car wouldn't move unless I straighten the wheels up a bit from full lock and gave it some regs
I was clunking as well

What could this be??
2004 2.5tdi r5

It the front differential not unlocking to allow for slippage. Scan for faults. Also check the transfer case or center differential.

Also you don't say how many miles are on the clock, but might be worthwhile to change all driveline fluids.

google "touareg stepper motor"

;)

It can be replaced without draining oil.

Your local dealership or ebay would be your best bet for the motor.

Yes, a lot of stepper motors were replaced under warranty.

Have you got 4 IDENTICAL tyres as in same make, same model, same tread pattern, same size and same tread depth to with 2mm on the same axle and not more than 3mm difference between front and rear axles? If not you need 4 new tyres.

No as the front were worn I put the rear ones to the front and put two good second hand ones on the rear but are different make and this was done Thursday last week
And when did your problems start?

Regardless, you MUST run 4 IDENTICAL tyres as I described above AT ALL TIMES.

You haven't engaged the diff lock have you?

In the meantime do NOT exceed 50 mph - not even by 1 mph - if you really do have to drive the car - the same speed as using your spacesaver spare wheel as the electronics can cope up to that speed with an out of spec wheel size.

If you are getting transmission wind-up [which is what it sounds like] you may burn the clutches out and wreck the gearbox.

Do sit down and read the buying a used Touareg thread - link in my signature below.

Are you running the right engine oil in your 2.5 Tdi to avoid premature camshaft lobe wear for example?

But that wouldn't make the wheels lock up when doing a three point turn to the point where it won't move unless you straighten the steering then it clunks?
Yes it will. I had that. Even pulling the ESP and ABS fuse saw binding around tight corners. Replaced the wheel speed sensor and all was well.

It happened on Friday about 125miles in to my journey then staid away at week end and droveback on Sunday

So should I replace wheel speed sensor and tyres first or is the stepper motor broke as well?

Let's think about this for a moment or two.

Everything is fine for the first two weeks.

You put a different mix of tyres on the car on Thursday and your problems start on Friday . . . .

What do you think the most likely problem is?

What tyres are on the car?

What tread depths are they?

I'm not with the car at the moment so don't know depths but at a guess the two odd ones on the rear have a slightly different tread depths so most likely the problem came about by this

So what you are saying is get 4 new tyres but what do I do about the stepper motor
Do I replace it as well or just the tyres and try it

And what about wheel speed sensor
Change or wipe it with vagcom and test it when tyres are replaced?

Nooby is right.

If the tires do not match, make them match! That is not an option. All four times must be worn almost exactly the same or you will have binding. Do this first since it must be done! Period. End of Story.

Clear all codes using a VCDS or dealer machine. Do not trust any generic code readers! Test drive. If the abs error does not return, you should be good. Sometimes error codes are random and do not return. Sometimes they return in 6 months and can be fixed then. Sometimes something like a really mismatched tire can confuse the computer enough that it could set in abs sensor error code when the sensor is good.

Clear all codes using a VCDS or dealer machine. Test drive. Rescan for error codes. Worth saying twice!

If the ABS error returns, fix the sensors. The sensor are an crucial part of the system. A bad sensor can confuse the computer and then the computer will lock up the differential at the wrong time! The abs sensor/wheel sensor is also used by the traction control system. A bad sensor can cause binding. A bad senor can not be tolerated and must be replaced or it will, over time, via lockup damage both the tires (back to step one) and damage the drive train.

Once the tires and abs sensor are correct, if you still have lockup, then replace the stepper motor.
