Hi guys,

The book was very helpful. I had no idea how complex this engine is. I started digging in and found some broken vacuum lines, suspect I have to take manifold off to fix(any sugeestions on what not to do will be appreciated.)
On a separate note I am discovering what a bad owner someone down the line was. They had no idea how to take things apart and have done some damage. Finding things duct taped, the air box for starters. I can not see how the airbox was supposed to go together or how they broke it. My MK4 doesnt have an extension before the air flow sensor. Does anyone know if this is supposed to come apart? If so what held it together? Or is it truly screwed up...

is it a 2009 like yu say in your first post or a 2006 like in your signature or do you have both?
2005 is 3.2 and 2009 is 3.6 so 'slightly' different engines and different parts. Refer to my other link if it is a 2009. Choose engine and then look at the component you want. In this case it is Air Filter.

I was told it was 2009 when i bought it, vin says 2005 3.2. according to that picture it does indeed come apart normally, but is supposed to have an o-ring seal. i don't seem to have that, guessing thats what keeps it together since i don't see any way to clamp it. previous owner just taped everything he broke.

actually looks like im wrong. the o-ring goes to the air mass meter. my meter is still connected to the tube that goes into the box, but that tube is not connected to the box. That picture does not show them as separate components, maybe it is broke. very clean break if it is.

On the filter box side there are two srews (number 10 in the pic). After the MAF there is a spring clamp (number 11). You can get the part numbers from the same website and buy the parts from VW.

Just click on the number and you get the vw part:
O-ring is N 90921901
Spring clamp is N 90785901
Screw is N 10419701. You need 2.
If part number have changed vw will sell you the updated versions.

You will need this tool for the spring clamps:

You can use a standard plier but this makes it real easy to work with hose clamps.

my problem is not the maf or o-ring. its the part they attach to. It is not attached to the airbox and I see no way of attaching it to stay. I think it must have been glued and broke off.

Hi Prang, and welcome.
You have come to the right place. Lots of very good anoraks here that know the Touareg’s in their various guises.
Sorry to be so forward but I hope you purchased the Touareg fairly cheaply as it sounds like it was not cared for by the previous owner/s!
These cars are fantastic, but fairly complex to the uninitiated! If you have deep pockets... great. If you are like the rest of us, then we have to figure the issue out and repair it.
Ask the right questions and you will get great help.
You are up to 10 posts so only a 1/3 to go then post some pictures so we can assist better. Pictures always get the point across much faster.

I havn't gotten as far as plugging it in yet. Gonna fix the obvious stuff first. The vacuum leak I can hear and the engine is running rich. Might buy a VAGcom, dont like paying people to work on my cars.

And don't forget to check the chain tensioner and prime it with oil.
For the rich condition I have two leads: first is easy to check or replace: the evap valve n80. Second are the knock sensors. There is the maf too but it is working fine in my case. You will need to check all vaccum lines too. The hard lines start crumbling to pieces when you touch them. Take a look at the intake manifold from the engine link I gave you above and check everything. I will check the evap valve and report if it fixes the rich issue in a few weeks. If not then I will get to the knock sensors.
