Depends on how hard you want it to hit. Two 12in JL's with a 1,000 watt or more amp would hit pretty hard. If you are just looking to round out the sound more and add some bass one 10" or 12" would be fine.

More importantly what kind of music do you listen to will affect the type of box and size of your system. For example if you like rock and jazz you will probably want a sealed box that produces tighter and more accurate sounds. While if you like rap and RnB then you might want a ported box that will hit harder without the accuracy of a sealed box.

Also keep in mind how much cargo room you want to suck up for your system. You can easily fill the entire trunk area with a high end system.

I can tell you with my install, a single 10" is plenty. I listen to all kinds of music, from Jazz to Rap, and a single 10" can give you plenty of bass. For my install I had a custom 10" enclosure with a JL Audio 10" Sub built so I would retain as much trunk space as possible. There are also several good pre-made boxes from JL, Alpine, etc. if you are looking for a more cost effective solution.

Holy crap, that's one of the cleanest installs I've ever seen. I assume the box used some of the area behind the access panel that is normally on the left side there?

I agree. Nice clean install. And you still have tons of cargo space. I am a big fan of the JL's and custom audio enclosures. How much do you figure it cost for a single 12, JL box and Alpine amp installed on the Touareg?

Is that a child seat in your car? Haa bumpin the bass with the kids in the car. That is great!

In my install i have a single 12inch and yeah a single sub is plenty for the treg. I just needed access to my spare tire and the installers managed to do tht. I ask abt installing the sub on the left like themcnut but tht wld take 2 days to make the fibre glass mould and had to leave my car as well which was not an option. But really happy with the results and was cost effective costed me only 1100 dollars including installation and cabling.

My stereo shop guys hand built the Sub Enclosure. They first took a mold of the inner fenderwell, then built the box from there.

Tahoe, good eye. Actually there are two car seats if you look close. I have to keep it down when they are in the car. But after drop off at school, I have a nice 30 minute drive to crank it up.

As far as cost for the setup you mention, you will have to check with your local stereo shop guys. I would ball park it at around a $1,000 with a pre made JL box. For my install, the custom enclosure was $800 without the sub or amps.

Dilip, nice install. You are right, my custom Sub Enclosure took several days.

Pictures in the link are fixed now.

There is a post on Vortex, where I posted all the pictures of my installation. You can find them if you search the archives for "subwoofer". Guitarman started the topic called "Adding subwoofer to Nav/Audio system?"

Since I was replacing the all speakers and adding an amplifier, I went with a large 5-channel amp, which wouldn't fit behind the sub :)

The sub enclosure takes up all of the space behind the panel all the way up to the rear seats. The small panel, which used to have a handle for removal in it is actually screwed to the enclosure box, so it's not going anywhere. :)

I can't believe I haven't seen this thread before now. My Treg is going under the knife to have a single 10" Infinity Kappa Perfect installed in the drivers side compartment this Thurs. I used this space saving technique in my GTI and it worked great so I figured I carry it over to the Treg. Now I find this thread were 2 others have already done this. Whats funny is I am also using the same series of Alpine amps as "themacnut". I'll post pics once it's complete.

Good pics guys. This is the first car I haven't put a complete system in.
At first, I thought the factory system would do but I've got to say, after almost a year, I hate it. The quality of sound produced at any sort of "fun" volume is poor. I've already decided to upgrade all the speakers to high-end aftermarket and I'm back and forth on the sub thing. My problem is I've got 2-12"subs in a sealed box. 2 A weighted amps that push 1100 watts RMS and a killer head unit sitting in my closet.

hey sushi

all tht can be applied u can't go with the option of making a fiber glass enclosure on the left as it cant accompany 2 12 subs ur best bet is to do the way i did u might have to the change the enclosure to measurement like mine so u can access the spare tire if thts an issue or leave it as it is in the sealed box. The 2 subs will take the whole front like in mine i was able to squeeze in 2 amps bc of 1 12 sub but in ur case i wld recommend mounting the amp behind the sealed box or make custom side enclosure on both left and right for the amps.

Sparewheel sub

Does anybody have pics of the small sparewheel subwoofer (under the spare - featured in the Cayenne), and maybe dimensions of the compartment space under the spare for a custom installation? Also, how does the sound come through the compartment cover - holes?
