I have figured out the fault code above is a non working Auxiliary Water Pump 059121012B

Searched here and on the web but not exactly sure of the location, it is in a bracket that is probably attached on the side of the engine somewhere and will take a look when I get home.

If anybody has replaced this part, either at shop or themselves any additional info would be appreciated.

I know this post is old but I think I have the same problem. Where did you find the pump on the engine?

 

My VR6 (T1) has an electronic re-circulation pump V55 as part of the coolant system. The pump works when engine shut off and their is no driving airflow.

 

I found and replaced it. It was at the back of the ending bolted on. If you follow the hoses from coolant reservoir down, it is about a 12 inches down in the mess off coolant hoses. I replaced in but the error message stays.

 

Unfortunately on our the connector was fried, pump must have shorted out and fried the connector. I had bought the part and ended up having dealer put in, with a new connector and labor it ran almost $300 but working good since then.

 

Is your Touareg the 4.2 V8?

I googled the part number, plenty avail on aftermarket (incl China). Thought it was very common problem, so I got one, photos are in my above posting. But changing to new one gave rise to same CEL's as OP. After every 2 rides.

Thanks for your reply. It was a very difficult find, I did that 5 weeks ago.
But after changing to an after-market pump, it worked for 2 weeks, then showed my above stated dual-errors.

Can you guide me to the relay too, I can't seem to find it, the engine plenum fuse box only had 2 relays in there, not related to pump. Need to check the relay properly before I buy an Original pump as 2nd replacement.

I too have the same issue, bought electrical pump from aliexpress for 22$. Replaced it but alarm is still there. The problem is not the pump but perhaps we are misguided. Do you have diagnostics device which can read long coding value?
I have ODBEleven and engine ecu coding shows that the car has 2 electric water pumps(touareg 2011 VR6). I have found one, the other is not electric but mechanical attached to the belt. So can you reffer to the picture i have attached. The hexadecimal value 43 in 5th byte group, do you have it or its onther number?
Because i started to doubt that the car may have 2 pumps. @VWBob has posted his coding and engine ECU also has 43 in 5th byte group. So it must have 2 electric pumps. @G6mdxvct has suggested that it may be behind alternator above oul cooler, and he is perhaps correct. Need to check. I found a water hose entering in the engine but not sure if its a pump.

 

Did you buy OEM part ? Sometimes non-OEM part does not have the electrical configuration correct so the Touareg ECU thinks the part is still faulty. Had this happen with a Door Lock Actuator for my A4, worked fine but still threw Fault Code in VCDS because the electronics was not set up properly to tell ECU it was working.

2nd, my secondary coolant pump had a bad connector, when I had dealer replace that part they said the connector was bad and replaced that also, has worked fine ever since.

My error is short circuit on the pump b corcuitry. Other are low inpedance. All of us changed the same part and all of us still have yhe same issue.
So i shall dismiss your doubt.

 

Thanks VWBob for your inputs. It's not inconceivable that all 3 of us r9guy, kickboxin and me have same errors after changing. We all bought the imitation part from Aliexpress. I do usually use OEM for critical parts, just that I see this pump as superfluous and wanted to save some bucks just to get the CEL off.

The pump has a 3 pin connect, hence they can't park a relay inside it (relays need at least 4 pins, and one more for canbus signal). So there must be a relay hiding outside somewhere. Once I verify that the relay is fine, I will get a OEM pump on standby, get mechanic to check the connector, If connector is fine, will put in the OEM pump and see how goes. I just want the CEL off.

R9guy-The earlier OEM had intermittent open circuit. The aliexpress one had a Short to GND once. So we can't discount it's failure yet. We ought crack open the old OEM one, see if there is any complex circuitry in there.

No. 31/32/33 seems likely to house relay 4H0 951 253 C. Seems next to engine plenum area, but it could also be at the under dashboard too. Will hunt it down once I finish long travels.

-Check condition of relay part no,. 4H0 951 253 C
-Trace the wire colours from there to pump and check for resistance to Pump 2 connector. If it's fine, then suspect likely rogue aliexpress pump. Poor man pays twice !!

I have this same code, CEL on, and the parts are on order.
Can I continue to drive the car? Assuming I am keeping an extra sharp eye on the coolant temperature on the dash, of course. I'm thinking, for example, through the city in rush hour is bad idea but on the highway at off hours should be fine right?

You pump motor on pump 2 is gone. I went through this twice and it was the initial signs of what turned out to be a bad head gasket. Hopefully in your case it’s just the pump. Relatively cheap to repair and fix. It’s behind the engine under some heat tape behind the air manifold. Pinch the lines of the two hoses and there’s two torx screws holding it in. Tricky to get at but can be done from either side of the engine. Make sure you purge the air out of the system after and keep an eye on your coolant.

 

Yes I did have to remove to the air intake hose from the airbox to gain access but I did literally have broke the bracket off the moto cause there is no way to get any tool back there to get it off.

 

My local VW mechanic tested the circuit for this and found that it was good so in his option the ECU needs to be replaced $1,200 and re-coding from VW. I have a replacement pump coming and I will replace on my own. Hopefully its just the pump in my case and not the ECU.

 

Reviving this old thread. During last fault (documented above), I renewed the contact points of socket, it was slightly burnt out. Then put in a new original coolant pump. 16 mths later I am getting CEL again. Same issue, tiring.......

Will recheck the wiring properly again, thereafter will reluctantly get another coolant pump (059 121 012 B). I am quite sure this is a nagging issue with pump design. It has no relay nor fuse, directly controlled from ECU, slightest of deviations, it sends out CEL.

Any insights from those having this problem ?

 

Was a video made on how to remove and replace the pump itself. I’m being told that mine has a small leak and needs replacement. I’m still waiting for a quote from the dealer.

Points to note
- 2 heat cloth covers, one thin for coolant junction, one thick for coolant pump. Ensure they are wrapped back tightly, and not near the hot catalytic, mine smouldered to flames & smoke as they came loose and almost touched cat.

- there is no fuse or relay controlling this pump. 3 wires and plug connects it straight into ECU. Ample china made pumps, best avoid, many here had issues with them. Best to get Peirburg, which is ori, but I can't seem to verify it on the 3rd pump I've bought.

It'd be great if the rest of the participants here chimed in on how they solved theirs. Prob a 5 yr recurring issue....

Got a CEL the other day. Hooked up VCDS and found I had 2 faults.
12348 - Coolant Pump 2 P261A 00 [096] - Open circuit
12351 - Coolant Pump 2 P261C 00 [237] - Short to GND
I have an OEM pump on bracket unit part# 059 121 012B. Waiting on the harness connector w/pigtails attached and I'll follow the directions in the link of post #42.
Has anyone moved this pump from it installed location to one that's more convenient to work on?

 

Yes, typical 5 yr fault cycle. Proximity to hot Cat, weakens the pump complex circuitry inside. I tried work w mech to relocate pump, very convoluted task. We didn't as the pipes/joints could well leak and cause a bigger issue.

My wire adapter was also fried, charred. Thinking that it was high amp, I added a fuse box on +ve to pump. To protect against shorting or over amp. I've used a 3 & 5A fuse, yet hasn't blown. Meaning so far no high amp passing thru. All this wire plug renew and pump change requires a spineless mech w snake hands. That's why we need prevent by ensuring it's done well.

 

I guess I got lucky as I've had this vehicle for 7 years.
If the proper lines/clamps are used I don't see how leaks could be a problem.
I will replace and leave in it's normal spot for now, but will take measurements of pipes/tubing/clamps to plan on moving in the future.
