VW Touareg TDI arrives with $1,150 tax credit

"... The Touareg TDI showcases the best of both worlds, an alternative fuel Sport Utility Vehicle that provides fuel efficiency and go anywhere driving capability."

Not sure how vwoa can make that claim with air susp. and locking rear diff. missing from the options list for 2010. :---)

Well technically they are talking about the 09 model and the 09 TDI was available with Air Susp and a rear locker.. just not sure dealers ordered any (and it's too late now.) I had a dealer tell me they found one 09 TDi w/air in the computer that a dealer on the east coast had inbound.. (it wasn't white because a customer had preordered with their own options.) Unfortunatly (and obviously) the unit was sold, therefore unavailable. :(. So... there might actually be one out there.

Yeah, found the same here. Chris at VW of Langhorne (13 year vet) did a quick search earlier today and found 4 units currently inbound to the US wth air. But as expected, they were ordered with everything but the kitchen sink.

So for someone that actually wants a diesel SUV that isn't a softroader, you're apparently SOL if you didn't get one of the 30 '09 trucks that were special ordered.

And my dealer couldn't take an order for an 09. They said in like January that they were ready to take 09 orders so I went down and they didn't have pricing so I had no idea what the thing would cost? They then said the only 09s available were going to be the demos white and black already on the way none of which are equipped like I want. Recently they called about taking a 2010 order and I got down there and they didn't have the 2010 order guide yet. Hell I would have ordered an 09.

Actually, the tax credit is net to you. The sales tax deduction on auto purchases this year will only return you say 20%.

I was all over trying to get an order with no luck... so who got the order forms?... sounds like inside stuff.

I challenge anyone from VW to explain why Air and RDL cannot be ordered.

I am now looking for any V8 or V10 with 4-corner Air, new or used. Lease return in less than 3 mos. I thought I found one this morning but it was sold to the Parts Manager of the dealer. Had I known 2010s have no Air, I would have ordered a 2009 V8 a few months back.

Where is the Auto Press on this one. Call them on it!

lediana, this isn't the last word on air susp. There are subsequent posts that detail the return of this option (e.g. search "order guide"). Hope this helps.

Checked with your accountant before buying. We were considering getting a Jetta Sportwagen TDI for my son when he goes off to grad school. There is a $1300 tax credit on the Jetta TDI. However, on checking with my accountant, I found out that I wouldn't qualify due to AMT (alternative minimum tax) guidelines. Too bad because in the state of Connecticut, we also can deduct the sales tax on the Jetta TDI. And that is about $1500. So if I qualified, I would have been able to take $2800 off the price of the car. Which happens to be close to the difference between the gas model and the diesel model.

Thanks racer4. I've been following the 2009 model page. Seemed like it took forever for the T'reg to make the list. Nice to see the VAG models ahead of this curve this time. BTW, when's your T'reg scheduled for delivery?

Early to mid Nov. so they tell me. Did you pick up yours yet?
Bet you can't wait. I'm looking to pick up mine by Sat. Maybe earlier if the weather's sh!tty. Got to have a sunny day. :D

2010 fun and tax breaks

Hi all, new to the board. I found 3 tax related benefits for myself in my home state:
1. The Fed tax credit that you mentioned
2. Section 179 which is the SUV loop hole on trucks with 6k curb weight
3. Sales tax return in my state up to a $50k purchase

Some of these will sunset at the end of 2009 so talk to your CPA if you have questions...

I just received my 2010 TDI in Galapagos Gray and Mocha-Latte int. very loaded with 20". I am very happy and have not seen one like this anywhere, when I pulled back into the car lot today to get some other items worked out we were swarmed by people at the lot never saw a TDI Touareg. I got very lucky that it was on order and the person backed out last min. Also picked up the ext. warranty just in case.
It feels like a very expensive car and much smaller then our other SUV.
Cheers

I knew about the federal tax credit (1.) and state sales tax deduction (3.), but wasn't aware the Treg qualified for Section 179 (2.). How does that one work?

BTW, congrats and best of luck with the new rig! Just don't ask for advice on offroad tires with those 20" wheels. ;)

Hi Schubie, On the Sec. 179 it works if your using it for business which is my case. I was almost positive on the curb weight which is the weight of the car with passengers + luggage and believe it is over 6k pounds. Again ask your CPA when you itemize your taxes for 2009 tax year. You can depreciate this asset to zero.

And yes I have no plans of any serious off roading with 20", it will do fine going up skiing but outside of that I would buy a complete set of 17" for any off road play.
All I want to do now if try and find some monitors for the front headrests and do a rear entertainment system.

Thx
J

My accountant mentioned there is a strong possibility that the Obama/Perlosi team may end or restrict the Section 179 soon since it encourages the purchase of heavy/big vehicles. He suggested getting a new car this year and get the 179 deduction on the books. Even if the income isn't there - the loss can be carried forward. 1st year deduction is $25K, completely deducted in 5 years. There was an approx 18 month window back around 03/04 where the 1st year deduction was $100K which fueled a lot of SUV sales.
