Has anyone sent their oil in to the lab for analysis of their 507.00 5w-30 spec oil yet for breakdown analysis?

Is 10,000 miles really realistic on the oil between oil changes?

What about if trailering a 4000# ultra light `18.5 ft camper trailer? Should I consider shorter intervals? Oil for these babies is not cheap.

... but an engine is HUGELY expensive!

The short answer is no. You will largely be wasting time, money and resources with a 10,000 miles UOA and less than 10,000 miles OCI's.

VW 507.00 specification oil is actually made to go 30,000 miles /50,000 km. Indeed it can NOT be called VW 507.00 if it can NOT pass that test ! Total (a highly regarded refiner of VW 507.00 actually has it documented on their web site. The standard (VW 507.00)has been around since 2004. So as you can see, 10,000 miles OCI's are the VW recommendation and ultra conservative. If you are at all concerned, the mileage to get a UOA is app 30,000 miles. Why? We have 3 year/36,000 miles warranty periods. This gives you 6,000 miles buffer to document and work out any engine warranty concerns. If you have the 10 year/100,000 miles drivetrain warranties, then I would say 30,000 (again if you suspect issues/concerns) 50,000 and 80,000 miles.

There are longer answers, but they might be TMI if you already have made your mind up to change @ 5,000 miles or are convinced 10,000 is living on the razors edge and your engine is going to blow, Scottie.

Porsche is a bit less conservative. The OCI for my 2013 Cayenne diesel is 20k. Essentially the same engine. Only difference is that Porsche specifies 5W30 oil that meets their C30 spec. Porsche C30 also meets or exceeds

  • VW 504 00
  • VW 507 00
  • ACEA A3/B3
  • ACEA A3/B4
  • Mercedes MB 229.51
  • BMW LL-04 / Longlife 04
  • Porsche C30

I have my oil checked every 10k and always looks great. They did spot some fuel in the oil once. Dealer changed a sensor and all was great next change. NAPA has a Wix program.

Fuel in Oil

I just had my third sample returned (first on Castrol SLX LL03 5-30) and the report mentioned fuel (4.5%) in the oil. This had the undesirable effect of lowering the flashpoint to 350. The previous two reports were fine. THose were 9000 and 6000 miles earlier. The only thing I know that might have contributed was a fuel filter replacement about halfway through that oil service interval. The vehicle ran like crap and jerked and jolted under acceleration. After the filter change, all was good.
If there are any other ideas about how fuel gets into oil in an engine that should otherwise be excellent (2004 V10 36000 miles, well maintained), I would be happy to know.

Copy of the report? I could see the TBN level of the oil being close to depleted, but what is most important is the centistoke viscosity of the oil after that kind of mileage... whether it has the base stock shearing down to under 10 centistokes, to the mid 9's.... that would concern me. The oil is made in Europe, its full group 4 PAO based synthetic motor oil, that stuff doesn't really break down that easy over a lot of miles, compared to a Group 3 hydro isomerized fake synthetic motor oil, which is what we call full synthetic here in the USA, thanks to Castrol.

Bob Is the Oil Guy (BITOG) is a really good online resource if you'd like to know more about oils and oil analysis after use.

Which is why I stocked up on both from the Pep Boys sale end of july, and the Napa sale in June.... about 40 quarts worth. I should be good for a while with a 2012 passat tdi and a touareg, if I can swing a great deal on one.
