This is another thread for the Melbourne/Victorian Touareg owners GTG...

Some details so far..

Date: July 26th..

Initial location : meet at my place (near Cobaw state forest), for a tea/coffee/chat.. then a bimble through selected parts of the forest.. depending on what you feel comfortable doing there are easy, through to medium/hard tracks.. I'll be taking the easier tracks.. as I would prefer not to scratch my 2008 Touareg.. maybe in 2012 I'll feel different..

then we could meet back at my place for another chat/discussion Treg style..

Duration - time from melbourne CBD - 1hr along Calder Highway, Cobaw state forest is 2 mins from my front gate... ok well, maybe 3 mins.

time in the forest, well, allow 1-3 hrs, depending on what you want to explore, recovery gear etc. as appropriate.

then meet back at my place, for a chat/tea/coffee, then departure for home.

regards,
Paul.

Hi Paul,

That's a great idea. Count me in for the 26th July.

I might have a look at what sort of tracks are available suitable for 4WD's in the Cobaw, just need to keep in mind other traffic, e.g dirt bikes.

Is there anything you would like us to bring, snacks with the tea or coffee!

Regards

afternoon suit better?

In relation to a meeting time.. I am making an assumption that an early afternoon meet would be preferable to a morning start?

but just wanted to validate the assumption...

my suggested start time is 1pm.

more details, location, equipment, etc.. will be sent to people coming on the trip via PM.

ok?

Paul.

Thanx Paul -
Do you think we'll have enuf time with a 1pm start?
I reckon by the time we spend an hour or so on the meet-n-greet, the inevitable banter, checking out cars, etc. that we'd want more time for driving experience. It is only about an hour away from Melb (yes?), so we don't need a morning to get there.

I suggest we meet at 11-12, maybe have a bit of lunch (BBQ? BYO of course...) and chat, and be ready to hit the tracks at 1-ish. Gives us a several hours of daylight exploring, with a bit of daylight still up our sleeve should someone have a mishap....God forbid.

I don't mean to be too forward inviting ourselves to your place for a BBQ - is there a picnic ground that would suit us........??

What are your thoughts Gerald, David, Alan, et al...??

Hi Paul,

Anytime is fine with me, I live in the Western Suburbds, so the trip to Cobaw is not a big issue for me, however I can not speak for others.

I am more then happy to bring my own food for BBQ or just some sandwiches and a cup of tea.

Around that time, we will have just gotten over the shortest day, so an earlier start might be better in the event of a mishap, however there should be plenty of willing hands, sometimes it's also daylight that's needed.

I think there is a picnic ground in Lancefiled! maybe we could meet there if there is enough room, or as suggested meet at Paul's and meet / chat.

Again I am very comfortable with some one else making the arranagements for a change!!

Regards

I am happy to go with the flow but lunch first sounds like a great idea. I'm in Seaford so I have a 2 hr drive, straight up the freeway so no big deal.

I will try and get the VAG COM by then so it will give us time if anyone wants to turn off those damm chimes.....

Al

Hey - good call Al, I'm all for turning them off...........& my missus might not curse so much!!
If the VAG COM is achievable, that'd be great.

We need to get the message about this GTG to Deamons, Poolwater, Ozvino, V10ken, & Treggie who all expressed an interest in attending last year's failed GTG.

Hey guys, thanks for letting me into the discussion. I'm all for attending and finally getting to meet some other Treg owners, but I'm scheduled to be doing a Victorian Hillclimb Championship round at Morwell that day. Bugger ! However, if anything turns to poo on that, then I'll definitely be in. For what it's worth, I think that alant is right on the timing, a BBQ lunch first is a better way to start off, especially if there are people like me who haven't met the rest of you yet.

Guys pls note that a freelance journalist from the overlander magazine, Robert Pepper, will be joining that day to cover the gtg. Be ready for some cover pics.

#14 ·
In my diary and all set to go. If we got a journo tagging along with a camera, guess I'll need to wash the beast beforehand and make her all pretty.

#15 ·
Cover or no cover, the important thing Robert is to get the spelling right.........it's Touareg........lol.....
We look forward to meeting you, and hopefully having a good group of us to put on some sort of show.

Excellent work on reviving this idea.
Erin and I will be there.

We live in Melbourne, and it takes about 90mins to get to Lancefield, so anything after an 11am start sounds reasonable. Agree about the daylight.

Could I also suggest that we end the day at the Morganfields Winery. It's just at the end of Greens track (coming out of the Cowbaw State Forest), and a sensible transition to the bitumen. I've visited the winery a few times and suspect that if we were able to confirm some numbers, they'd probably be quite welcoming.

Cobaw has pretty wide tracks, so not a bad one for people not wanting scratches.
It does get a bit muddy, but I think we'd be ok. I took a mate through there in his ML320 with low profile road tyres (in summer).

Only other suggestion I'd have would be;
UHF radios, and an agreed channel
Meeting point at the that is easier for people who don't know the area. Example Lancefield, Woodend, or the Hanging Rock carpark.
The suggestion of a BBQ lunch is excellent.

GTG - proposal

hi there,

in relation to meeting at a Hanging Rock car park (pay to get in) , or picnic area..

I think it would be more hospitable to meet at my place ( 50 acre farm, a stones throw from the Cobaw).. I mean we have heating, toilets, comfy chairs.. all things car parks don't have.

so, my proposed itinerary is:
  1. arrived at my place, approx. 11 -11.30am
  2. have a BYO BBQ at my place, the Weber BBQ will be fired up.. ready to go!
  3. those who want to drive in the tracks etc in cobaws can, those who want to drive wider dirt roads can..
  4. meet at Morgansfield winery for afternoon tea/sampling/discussion - 3, or 4pm?
  5. depature for melbourne at one's leisure.

How does that sound? date of 26th July still holds..

a PM message of my address for those attending to follow..

regards,
Paul.

Hi Paul,

That sounds fantastic with me. A light lunch, followed by a trip into Cobaw which add's a bit of dirt to an already dirty Egg and some wine tasting and discussion is a great way to a spend Sunday.

26th is still fine with me, I am looking forward to it.

Thank you for sharing your hospitality with strangers.

Regards

Sounds good. Do you want me to call Morganfield to confirm they are open and ready for a largish group?
How large is the group at present? Have you got a list of RSVPs?

Erin and I did a bit of a recce down the M&M and Walkers track a couple of weeks back.
Few bog holes, but nothing to deep. One extremely slippery hill to climb. We had to reverse back and take a run up in Low with the diff lock. I think that could be a challenge for those with road tyres :)

could be worth the drive down to Melbourne maybe.....you got the pics rmpx?

#25 ·
Thanks Rob! I'm reading your writeup on 'D3 put to the test' in the overlander mag, and look forward to even a better one on the Touaregs!

#23 ·
Yup. SWMBO and I are all set. Your proposed itinery is an excellent suggestion. Probably won't be doing too much track work with the 21"s but definately make our way to the winery for a fine wine, or two.

Might even have to bath the beast before the drive up. Be the first time in about 8 weeks !!

#24 ·
I like your itinerary Paul - it's looks appealing, with something for all comers. It's great that RMPX can bring a new model for us to crawl over.........well done.

I'll be there.

#27 ·
Absolutely Peter.........the more the merrier. This is about the 3rd attempt to organise a gathering, and will (I believe) be the first Victorian GTG. All comers are welcome - your entry ticket is your Treg...!!! lol

Morganfield winery is open, and will be expecting us about 4pm.
This will be our last stop of the day, and a good place to regroup, if anyone gets separated, arrives late etc.
