Vertex driveshaft bearing support

Hi All...
So I am venturing off road end of Sept on the Googs Track here in SA and while on inspection my drive shaft bearing support is in good condition, I was thinking maybe I should have a spare on me.
I am not a massive fan of the original bearing support since it means taking off the drive shaft (correct me if I’m wrong here) but do like the idea of the Vertex support.

Link Here: http://www.touaregdriveshaft.com/

Has anyone ever used one/bought one, what are your thoughts on them? They are a bit pricey.

I can’t see myself taking the drive shaft off when I am out bush but these seem like a good idea and are supposed to be superior and last a life time??

Cheers,
Patto

Depends what has really failed - the rubber support fails quite frequently due to the center bearing failing/binding and thus overheating the rubber leading to failure. So the new support may be of little use without new bearing.

Fair call V10...
Is it the rubber support that is the failure point I keep reading about
OR
Is it the actual bearing on the driveshaft that is the issue that has everyone talking????

Cheers

My Vertex just arrived and it seems grossly overpriced @ $549. For that kind of money one can have a new rebuilt from Coloraqdo Driveshaft. Of course if would be nearly impossible to change on the trail.

True, I reckon they are very pricey for what they are, but if it was a worthwhile investment then I would look at it.

This is not the kind of thing to change on the hoof so to speak, Vertex or no Vertex.

Someone managed to bodge his with three lengths of half inch hydraulic hose held in place with cable ties and has done 30,000 miles since! As a get you home, fine, but I wouldn't have carried on driving it like that!!
Agreed, maybe I should not be so paranoid and just make sure my bearing support it is good nick before I go and then check it once I get back.

**I have my treg in for a service before I go on the trip, anything in particular I should ask them to check since I am going to go off road and make the engine work a little harder???

Cheers

Hi
I suffered this failure while on a very rough dirt road trip only 3 weeks ago. We are in far north west Australia, 2000 km from the nearest VW dealer. The bush repair we preformed was to raise the car extra high with the air suspension, crawl under and remove the bearing support (6 bolts). Cut all the loose rubber from the bearing and support. We used a one inch wide strip of 5 mm rubber matting about 500mm long. We looped this around the bearing and tied it to the housing with lots of strong cable ties. The bearing now has a small amount of play between the bearing face and the rubber matting and can no longer flay around the housing sounding like a gattling gun. Re assembled and 500 km later no issues. We check the repair every couple of days but all still good. Since we are on a long term holiday it will be December before we get to a dealer.

So items needed for bush emergency repair is socket set, strip of rubber, cable ties and razor blade and about 1 hour. Oh yes and a pair of dusty overalls if you have to crawl in the dirt under the car.....

You don't need a VW dealer -far from it in fact. You need to find someone who can repair or refurbish a prop shaft. There are plenty of good workshops around who can. They'll be able to put a new bearing on in a couple of hours.

drive shaft design joke

Just dropped my drive shaft rubber,131K on the clock, $3500+ to repair at dealer, $2400 plus one hours labour with lubemobile. As you know you have to replace the whole assy, what a joke, the design engineer who thought this up should be sacked. I expect better from VW. by the way, I have had my last few services done with Lubemobile, full book services as per VW, around 60% of the cost of the VW dealer. Full warranty on work, absolutely no problems at all.
give em a try, your wallet will love you.

Looks like my drive shaft bearing is about to go. My mechanic reports siginifcant slack in the bearing with a very stern warning "DO NOT TOW THE CARAVAN UNTIL IT IS REPLACED"

Currently searching for suppliers of the VERTEX unit, without getting wallet raped.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Support bearing ordered. Direct from Vertexauto.com

Pros: Extremely helpful staff (phone and website chat messenger) who go the extra mile to ensure ALL your questions are answered, and VERY prompt with responses. Price is good (and I picked up a $us25 saving because the on-line ordering process is not straightforward to anyone outside USA/Canada.

Cons: Their initial website (Eurpoean Parts Solution) re-directs you to Vertex website, and then the maze starts to try and find Touareg parts. Shipping costs are another nightmare for an international user.

Pro-tip: I emailed them before I placed the order, enquiring/confirming acceptable forms of payment and indicative costs to post/ship to my preferred delivery address. Once I had their commitment via email, I used that to instil some leverage against their noted website shipping charges.

It pays to get all your ducks in a row before committing to the purchase. Again, their customer support cannot be faulted.

Steve, you likely know, but remember to grease the center main bearing (both inner and outer seals come off to do this).

Also be sure to get no grease between center bearing housing and the surface of the Vertex unit...it will cause slipping and noise.

My Drive Shaft Bearing Mount support failed about 4 days ago.... looked at the forum for help and considered a number of options... Thanks to Dragline1570 managed to do a home remedy.

Clarke Rubber - 19mm hose (heavy duty) + 3mm one sided adhesive rubber.

The gap between the mounting bracket and the bearing is about 22mm (radius).

Wasnt too hard, my old man helped me out. Thank God for the fact that the Touareg has a bit of clearance, just a ramp for the rear wheels, and not too had after that.

See pics taken this morning:
