2005 V8, 55k miles.

Has all the symptoms of bad coolant sensors. Fan runs for about 15 minutes on strong high speed after a shutoff, eventually kills battery.

Hooked it up and the two codes it threw were:

P0106
P3081=low engine temp, (possible bad coolant sensor)

Started car up after replacements, Check Engine light is on, and the fan is still running strong after a shutoff.

Questions:

Do I have to clear the computer's fault codes? One older post said you have to do that to get the fan back to normal. Is that possibly why it is not acting normal after the repair? I understand it could be the thermostat too, But I really thought it was the sensors. Temperature gauge is working fine.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I just did my sensors. Had to clear the codes with Vag-Com. Didn't come back. But I did not have the fan running issue that you had.

BTW, the front sensor replacement was normal. New o-ring. Good to go. But the back one did not have an o-ring when I took it out and had no space for one either. I couldn't press down the sensor nearly enough with an o-ring to get the clip in. So I left it out. It doesn't seem to matter because that one is sitting vertically from the top down. No leak.

Presumably with any standard code reader. I assume that clears everything, even the specific VW codes. Autoparts stores sometimes do it for free or let you use it for a few minutes, I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Those readers plug into the diagnostic port in front of your left knee (sitting in the driver's seat), ignition on, let it read the codes, press 'erase', 'erase' again and you're done.

Double check both fans are operating. If one stops working it puts the remaining working fan in "limp mode" basically a fail-safe to ensure the engine stays cool which is why it is on high speed all the time.

*Definitely clear the codes*

Update--I cleared the codes last night, and the fans are off! woo hoo! I just bought one of those pocket readers at the Auto parts store for $50, and cleared them with that. They would not let me clear the codes with the one they let you borrow. They said they are only allowed to let you read codes with their reader. I figure it is handy to have anyway.

thanks everyone for your help!
