Smart.... If I had a TDI, I would keep that kit in a rear storage compartment in a thick zip-lock bag, just in case.
I've ran out of diesel way out in the country before. Our driver didn't notice the gas light on the dash. We had been driving all day. We had to syphon gas from a tractor left on the side of the road into a gatorade bottle in order to get to the next gas station (borrowed a vacuum hose from our truck). The 12oz of fuel from the tractor was not enough. We ran out again a few minutes later and had to walk a few miles to the service station. I bought a gallon of water, drank/dumped the rest out and filled with diesel, walked back to our delivery truck (it was dark now), dumped it in the tank and splashed a capful on the air filter, it cranked up and we drove to the station. It was dark now. The truck ran out and died again, just as we approached and we coasted into the gas station.
I would have been pist if the nozzle didn't fit the tank when we got there! Seems worth the $10 for the adaptor.
There was not another station for tens of miles. When we got back to our city, we stopped again to top off and got a small bottle of whiskey. When we returned to the warehouse, we celebrated making it back without being raped by the locals. (It was weird, we tried to ask where the nearest station was, or if we could use a phone (ours died from roaming all day). The people were very creepy, lots of guns and rebel flags everywhere. They would not speak back to us, just stared at us and clutched there rifles, peeked through the blinds, etc.). Also, diesel is the worst taste in the world. The worst. I watch the fuel gauge like a hawk now, even when I'm not in the driver's seat.
The vehicle was a 14-foot Isuzu NPR Box truck, Turbo diesel.
