Unplug sunroof drain hoses

Greetings!

I have a 2004 Treg. Recently after rain or carwash the mats in the back seat have been pretty wet. I read somewhere this could be because of plugged sunroof drains. I though about the AC drain, but I think that would be more in the front and I also read there were rear sunroof drains running down the pillars between the front and rear seat. So, I guess I'm looking for a how to on how to access these and unclog them. I looked for posts, but never found a clear cut "take apart". I mostly found ones dealing with the AC drain.
Any advice would be awesome!

Thanks!
Steve

dealer told me to try blowing air through it with an air compressor to unclog them. Havent tried it yet, but I'll let you know if it works.

If you locate the drains around the sunroof with it open then some line for a string trimmer can be fed down the drains to clear them. That nylon line is strong enough to be used as a snake in these drains. While I have not seen this specifically recommended for the vehicle I have seen it recommended and used on an Audi A4. Since they have the same 'genetics' I expect that the solution should work OK.

Your drain lines could have worked their way loose. All they are are rubber pull tubes over metal. I learned the hard way in my other vehicles...:anger:

Bentley recommends a 90.5 inch length of "such as a speedometer drive shaft inner cable." Remove the rear wheelhousing liners and work up through the D-pillars.

Hi All...

Can someone please help me find the exit points of the front drains on my T2 MY08 Touareg? I can see the holes in the sunroof and have pushed trimmer line down them put it seems to stop at a fair way down and I can not locate the exit point.

Cheers,
Patto

If I'm on the right wavelength here (and it's been a long day) the drains are located in the wheel well(s). There's a write-up a few years back on it - you'll have to use the Search function. HTH

Thanks Siberian...

I did find those drains in the wheel well that get blocked from leaves etc.
The ones with these large rubber plugs on the end.
But I thought they were just for water coming off windscreen etc?
I was assuming that I would find some pretty small drains for the sunroof since the holes are tiny??

Yeah I did try to get the misses to do that bud,
The only problem was I still couldn't see where the water was exiting from.
I had the wheel and wheel arch/cover off but couldn't find where the sunroof drain was exiting even with water coming out!!!

That's why I tried the trimmer line approach - but it was a no win either.

Cheers

It's like a roof leak, it could be coming miles from where it actually is showing up. If you want to use that approach, get some talcum powder and see where the break is. Best bet is drain the thing.

The drains in the wheel arches are only the drains from the "plenum chamber" or "bulkhead" or "the area immediately in front of the windscreen/windshield" [I've used all the names I've seen used on here in the past!].

Hi, I have the same issue as patto. Drains in the wheel well for "plenum chamber" or bulkhead are clear on my 2006 yet still have wet carpet. Any info on exit point of sunroof drains would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kurt

Have you checked out drain from the aircon unit? That can wet the carpet.

Have you checked the pollen filter is dry?

I'm experiencing the same problem as Kurt. I have a west driver's side carpet (l/h side). The plenum chambers on both sides are clean and draining, so not understanding where the water might be coming from. It sounds like the a/c problem causes a wet r/h carpet, not my issue. I've not been able to find the information on where sunroof drains exit either.... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Jaluka,

Not sure on US Tregs (appears your in the US) but this was definitely an aircon issue for me. Just gently pull down on the black cover in the foot well and unclog the light. Then you'll see the aircon hose, have a towel ready, pull it off and clean it. I then put some bees wax around the leaky end and reassembled. No water inside to date (touch wood). Might be worth you taking a look under there just in case.

As for those sun roof drains, I still haven't found them. But since I occasionally get a few drops of water on roof, I am going to seal the roof rail bolts as I have read that can be an issue.

Cheers
Patto

Thanks Nooby and Patto.

I checked the pollen filter, and it is dry as a bone. No leak on the a/c drain hose either. Patto, on US cars both of these are located on the passenger (r/h) side of the car.

I was able to pour water down the two plenum chambers below the windshield, and it drains fast and furious down into the two front wheel wells, as it should. I also poured some water down the two front sunroof drains, and it also drained into the two respective front wheel wells. In both cases no water showed up in the drivers (l/h) footwell - I had the carpet pulled up so I would notice even the smallest amount.

I am scratching my head, no idea where the water are coming in from. Could is be coming from the door? Windshield? I had that replaced a few years ago, and really did not become aware of any problem till a few months ago.....

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

^^^Jalika, the doors are triple sealed, therefore I'm leaning on the windshield seeing as that was replaced to begin with. Take a garden hose and spray only the windshield a full 15 min if you must. Then let it sit 30 min, and check the floor...

Hi all,

Finally I have fixed my wet carpet issue!

Found the sunroof drains -poured water in corner - normal drainage - no issues there.

I had already made sure the ends of the AC drains weren't plugged so to ensure the lines were clear, I did the coat hanger trick along with forcing water through drain by disconnecting connection and using garden hose - water poured out as expected - assumed no blockage here. Drove car for another day and still had wet floors.

This issue has been very strange in the fact that every time I drive it I never see any leakage and my wife consistently would come home with Touareg and say water rain out like crazy on my foot and passenger side floor. So, one time I drove the car as if she was "heavy on the right foot" and sure enough - water gushed out from under the passenger foot well. I instantly pulled over and removed the lower cover and found the entire aircon unit to be soaking wet from top to bottom.

Went home and looked further - disconnected aircon hose connection again with empty bowl ready for gushing water but nothing. Then, I stuck my finger up into aircon pipe and felt something with my finger. Seemed like this should be clear so I forced my finger further in and out came a big bowl full of water. Since then normal AC drainage has been seen and I have dried out the interior. So it seems something was causing blockage just before the connection from aircon unit to drain hose. To this day, I still am not sure what was in there to cause this.

So, if you have leakage in your footwell the best advice I can give from my experience is to ensure that water can be seen on the ground after running the AC. This is normal operation and might help isolate your issue.

Thanks for all the help!

Kurt

Sunroof Drain Blocked

Guys, I just spent two days chasing down the wet passenger side carpet in my 04 Treg. Only got wet when sitting facing down hill. So I turned it around and poured water over the sunroof for several minutes...water dripping out from under the botttom of the A pillar and the cover over the A/C blower. Opened the sunroof and found water standing in the depression for the drain...NOT draining as expected. Tried the trimmer line with no success and even a little air with no success. Decided to let it dry overnight, then I mixed a 50/50 solution of water and Drano and fed it into the drain with a basting saringe that I stole from the kitchen. Waited about 45 minutes, and it slowly started to drain. Added more and waited again, then using a 1/4 inch rubber hose pushed up against the drain, I hit it with 25 pounds of air pressure and boom, you could hear it clear out...Into the airbox plenum area that you can't get to without removing your whole dash on the inside and I don't even want to guess from the engine bay. Closed up the sunroof and ran water over it for about 15 minutes, lots of water from under the wheel well, but not a drop in the floorboard.
Can't say about the rear drains, since I have not had a problem with them yet.
