Alrighty I just purchased a 2006 v10, plugged VCDS when I was test driving it to check for any glaring codes to find it was in decent shape. On the drive home I plugged back in to check how things were looking to find VCDS not working. After making it home I discovered a short to 12v on the K1 line. It had an awful aftermarket radio and knowing those can make trouble I ripped all of it out. This fixed the problem temporarily until the next day I plugged in to find K1 was shorted again but this time to ground??

So with the bit of research I did there are a couple likely scenarios
1. the wire going to pin 7 on the diagnostic port is for k line and its shorting somewhere???
2. A bad module somewhere in the car is pulling the whole can/kline system down???

I have access to wiring diagrams and feel decently comfortable tracing wires. but I thought I should get the options from the pros before I go into it blind. There are a couple weird electrical things happening in the car. The drivers seat makes a clicking noise and one of the eclectic adjustment switches on the seat does not work. It also has had an issue with abs and the difflock controls flashing and telling me to put it in park on the dash. I have seen people referring to a strategy of unplugging modules individually until the short goes away.

The short is intermittent enough that VCDS has worked a couple times and I got an auto scan done and cleared all current codes.

Thanks for any suggestions

When you discovered these shorts, what exactly did you do to identify these? Are you talking about some error message you are getting from VCDS, or something you measured with a multimeter? If the latter, what electrical impedance are you seeing, and is it stable or changing?

All I have is k1: Short to +12 and my goal is to understand what short on k1 means. From what I have gathered the cable is seeing 12v on pin 7 when that should be a communication wire but I am not sure. Does that sounds about right?

Figured I would include this. These are some of the modules connected to pin 7. I might have gotten lucky with pulling the headlights. But it is an intermittent problem so not sure yet will update.

I just read the thread you have on TDIClub also. Interesting interaction you have w/someone on that site as well.
Thread >>>> v10 Short on K1

I also found some info on the Ross-Tech site about the K1 short (link below). I think you were on the right path with the aftermarket radio idea. You said you ripped it all out. Does that include any harnesses that someone attached to the original wiring?

Haha he's the village troll I guess. Unfortunately he has really good information as he is on the forums constantly. Getting that information is a bit uhhh challenging.

I think I got most of it out still a bit of splicing they did in the rear passenger side under the disk changer. Today I'm going to fix the ride hight sensor and hopefully do some more test driving as of the last time I checked that short is gone!!!! Hoping the short is coming from a headlight but we shall see. Appreciate the help.

Woah I wish I had read that before. I'd really like to not blow up my vcds cable that wouldn't be fun... Sounds like I need to check for the 12v short before I plug the cable in from now on.

Yea seems to the case. I've always said the same thing.
