If all the control elements and sensors attached to your turbo are fine, then it can be only the turbo itself, that's failed. When was it replaced? Do you see any oil leaks around the turbo (left side of the engine, when you're facing it with open bonnet), or do you have heavy smoke coming from the exhaust when accelerating hard or going uphill?

Also, does this code pop up regularly? Or did you just encounter it once? Do you have any accompanying codes? This code by itself can be "reset" by turning then engine off and on. However, it will come back if you do actually have a permanent problem with the turbo, and obviously your engine may also suffer additional damage if you keep just resetting it all the time, without actually fixing the problem.

The turbo is original one there no oil leaks around the turbo it does smoke drives ok if you feather the throttle but if you go to drive it hard it go’s in to limp mode and engine light comes on with code p0299

You didn't tell how many miles are on the car, but if it's a 2007 model, it has likely over 120-150.000 of them, which usually means it's ripe for a turbo replacement.

If you have VCDS you can actually make the ECU to "exercise" the VNT actuator, to 1. see whether it's moving properly, and 2. to loosen it, in case the vanes got stuck, but still salvageable. You've to use one of the Output Tests to do that.

You can also monitor and log the requested and actual turbo boost pressure values during drive (using the Meas. Blocks), which might help confirm what exact nature the failure is of.
