It's the gear selection indicator that is referred to here ( P R N D )

 

It's the limp mode for the transmission. You most likely will have a code or several when you run a vagcom test.

 

The ESP has nothing whatsoever to do with the aircon system so why is it switched off?

 

The air con and esp are linked according to my VW dealer. The esp is wired through the unit somehow. Anyway that is being repaired its the gear indicator that just started to act up.

No. Im saying that in some way a cable is routed via the aircon control unit. Phone a dealer to check if you like.

 

Probably the tip tronic switches in the gear shifter, or worse trans ecu or valve body.

 

Shifter sensor I think.
