Transmission jerk on downshift between 2nd & 1st gears

Anyone else noticed a hard downshift when slowing down and transmission shifts from 2nd to 1st gear. Sometimes I feel an even harder shift if doing a rolling stop and the transmission downshifts right when I hit the accelerator. I have no error codes when using my Ross-Tech VCDS. I am at 155,000 mi and have never done any transmission related maintenance. Also, we have noticed that the transmission has done this ever since we first got it when it had 56,000 mi. on it. Just wondering if this is a normal thing or if it is something to worry about?

So for 100k miles you didn't "worry" about this, but now you want to know if you should?
Well...yes. Sometimes it is best to ignore your problems until they go away. This one never went away.

I have always been conscious about the fact that it makes the hard shift occasionally as I described above, so I changed my driving habits so that it rarely happens. Now with 155k miles, it seems like it 'accidentally' happens more often than it use to. I'm just wondering if it is a common thing for others and what to do about fixing it...if it is fixable.

Everything I have read about the transmission states that the ATF is lifetime...unless it starts leaking, then topping off is necessary.

The hard downshifts that are almost intermittent are more than likely the result of the TCM logic under a specific condition locking up the torque converter, engaging some of the trans brake, etc.... Thing about how difficult of a task the engineers have to attempt to program maps that will cover every single scenario and situation while still attempting to satisfy the loads required for emission regulations. If they had a decade to constantly enhance the maps, they would eventually make it shift buttery smooth under all conditions, but that's not the case.

That sounds logical to me Turbo. I actually experience a similar downshift while creeping forward on mine. My treg only has 4k miles on it. Sometimes pulling into a parking space...if I let off the brake to creep up just a bit more I get a strange jolt that almost feels like its dropping down a gear that was hung up. But I wonder if it is the torque converter locking up. Seems like a TCM issue to me. I have thoughts of getting yrktrg's remap but not sure if it will fix this particular issue.

I also get the same bump from 2nd to 1st. I notice it especially when pulling into my parking spot at home. I'll approach and be in 2nd and make the turn into a slight uphill to park and just before my car comes to a stop it shifts into 1st with a bump. Interestingly I can make it go away by being in sport mode which causes it to shift into 1st earlier while I still have some speed so I don't notice it.

Turbo's explanation of it being a TCM characteristic I think hits the nail on the head. I was always noticing an intermittent knock from 1st into 2nd and 3rd to 2nd and I've worked out how to reproduce it perfectly every time if I want to: coast down a hill in 1st and don't touch the accelerator and let it build up speed and it shifts up into 2nd very harshly. The same is true if you are in 3rd and move up an incline and take your foot off the accelerator and let it shift automatically into 2nd. Also very harsh. It does really feel as if it makes the shift with lock-up clutch engaged or a mis-timed release.

Although if someone else tries to do what I've said and they report no problems then maybe my gearbox is poked ?

Guys, think about it this way..... the TCM is attempting to read your mind..... if it keeps things soft and loose, then it will deliver a "CVT like" transition.... but from the TCM's perspective, when you roll off the brake and are trying to keep creeping after almost coming to a stop, you could also be trying to launch into a traffic gap from a "rolling stop", etc...... you wouldn't want the torque converter to be unlocked if you stomped it and to just have your RPMs redline without you receiving the desired forward propulsion.....

A slushbox is still a slushbox, even if it's an advanced one or a DSG. I've driven high end sluxboxes such as a V10 Ghallardo on a track, and I can assure you that the dual clutch system is crisp and a monster under those conditions, and knows what you expect from it at those limits...... driving the same vehicle around town\traffic and even rolling through the pit make you wonder why anyone would use that setup as a DD.

Once again, this is only my opinion and I'm not a transmission specialist by any means....

I've experienced the same transmission jolt/bump in both our Touareg and my Jetta. It happens in the same condition on both vehicles regardless of mileage on the transmission fluid. Most noticeably when I'm slowing down to turn into my neighborhood. It is not a slow turn but there's a dip in the middle so I've slowed down enough to get the car into second or first but then pick up speed after the dip. If I keep my speed up it doesn't happen because the transmission doesn't get confused about what I'm doing. Or, go slow enough for it to complete the processing and then it shifts smoothly.

I am kindof glad to hear this is characteristics of the transmission. At first it worried me. New car, trying to feel it out..I am almost extra tuned in for things that could be issues. But of course its a matter of getting comfortable with the vehicle. I came from a 09' TDI Treg...But it had quite a different transmission feel. This one is smooth but trickier. And so far on a hard launch its quite a bit harsher than the 6 speed was. Almost like this transmission on the T3 is set up for leisure driving. My 09' rewarding hard driving. It was smoother during full throttle than anytime. I have decided that modern day 8 and 10 speed automatics are harder to learn to drive than a new manual. One can figure out a clutch quick. But trying to figure out a computer is much trickier. All in due time. I am learning.

Does YRKTRG's remap help any of these characteristics? Just curious. I am leaning towards getting his TPS tune.
