Transmission fluid level/fill bolt

Hey this might be a dumb question but I’m doing a transmission fluid change on 2010 Touareg v6 TDI and I realized I have no clue on what size of tool it is to pull the fill/transmission fluid level bolt. I don’t have anything that’s the right size if someone knows what tool I need that would be great cause I’ve looked around the internet and can’t figure out what tool is needed.

Based on your random slammy comment, you have other things you need to spend money on than a large enough hex.

Splurge on VCDS first.
After that, hit up Pricess Auto and grab a cheap hex kit that has both sizes, or if you're really that worried about spending that much, buy individuals of each size and return the one you don't need...

The struggle is real

oh, there are problems I know... this is just where I'm currently working.. [e.g. other things include: the driver door latch electronics sometimes think they're locked so I have an emergency ziptie to pull the trigger, passenger window doesn't move (visible wiring issue), rear door is (mechanically) sticky - versus the driver door that is electronically sticky.]

Just a fun little investigation - sometimes I break out the multimeter...

Yes, I've got a DiagLink that tells me presumably as much as VCDS [notably, I have a cable.. just haven't installed VCDS because I have never needed it..] Diaglink tells me the issues all over the place, by system, like in the tranny section I get "impossible tiptronic signal" (or something to that effect), and all the other things.. much of which trip when the battery gets low [I suspect alternator because it's after a long drive in traffic that it trips out]..

I just wanted to check if low fluid was causing it to be: slow to shift into drive after I back out, sometimes it doesn't fully "click", sometimes it thinks it's in 5th, things like that.. In my experience (mostly Japanese) that is the kind of thing that I would check the "lifetime perfect" fluid on...

p.s. this is my sister's car and she doesn't need it and I'm just tooling around with it -- just in case the temporary ziptie thing was alarming..

So, what measurements have you taken\confirmed with your DVOM?
Nothing yet on PhoebeTouareg with the multimeter, although much requires it.
Prolly all I'll need is to check continuity against the wiring diagrams and I presume things will become pretty apparent..

On the ChuckWagon I have tested some relays and my 12V lighter socket and radio connections.. and of course across the actual battery occasionally.. oh and my power windows were stuck down in snow so I found the right spots to jack in a battery to raise 'em..

You do realize that your vehicle pet names mean nothing to the rest of us since you haven't made any reference to them before, and I thought we were talking about how your magical fluid replacement in one of those will fix your slamming shifts.... not really sure how the rest of your 12v socket, radio or windows are related to that subject.....

Where did I leave that crystal ball? 🔮

OK, well I have read people before state the opposite -- like "If you want us to know WTF you're talking about put your car in your profile"..

You asked specifically about the fun measurements I've taken with my multimeter (I presume -- I looked up "DVOM" because I hadn't seen that specific acronym) -- that was a partial list across all the vehicles in my driveway.. sticking with VW in the VW forum.. got it.. k.

If you mean which measurements I've taken with regard to the slammy tranny on PhoebeTouareg: none with my multimeter, tranny fluid temp with my diaglink..

I think we should unhijack this thread -- it was originally about the size of the hole in the check plug.. I have a set with "up to 19mm" hex in it (notably goes 15mm,17mm) AND I have a specific 16mm coming today from Amazon... I will report back as to actual fit just to conclude this but let's take electronics elsewhere..

Just to follow this up, 16mm fits easily (albeit with slight play) and 17mm is VERY tight - like I'm not sure if it's all the way in.. Anyway, the check bolt is not coming off... I am doing the pan, but am concerned that if I can't get that bolt out then I won't be able to fill it again when I put the pan back on.
