Transmission Fluid Change- T3

As per normal I change my Transmission fluid every 35-40K miles (max 50K). We sold back our pristine 2010 TDI (Wife wanted a newer one, I did not guess who won) for a 12' TDI Exc. Normally I'd change all fluids right off the bat but life is busy and it took me a year before changing this fluid.

90K miles on the car. Obviously never changed. The transmission would down shift harder than I like and sometimes it would stick when stopped, say reversing out of driveway, putting it in gear, it would not go.

Changed fluid with Motul ATF IV, new OEM filter, o-rings and all that. Significant difference in the way this transmission feels and shifts. I normally used Fuchs 4400 in the last Touareg which worked well. I did not do this myself this time as I am lazy and busy at the same time. ;) Dealer tried to talk me out of it. I subtly told them they are idiots and to just do what I ask.

I suggest changing your lifetime no change fluids. All of them. Rear diff is happening soon too. Motul Gear 300 for that.

This 8 speed is like butter.

I had the same thing done on my '11 this past May. Had ~99K on it. Dealer also started by saying they don't recommend as it could cause transmission problems. After questioning them a bit they then said that it doesn't always cause problems and agreed to do it. I wound up supplying them with OEM fluids/filter/O-Rings/gaskets just so they couldn't say that was the reason in case of a problem afterwards.
The transmission shifted smoother afterwards and since then I've noticed that I get slightly better MPG.
Had my front/rear diffs and transfer case done @~80-85K.
Filled for life has been debunked by many.

35-40k miles seems excessively obsessive unless you’re constantly towing 8000lbs uphill everyday.

When I changed mine at 65k miles, it still looked and smelled pretty new to me. I tow/drive a lot through the very mountainous roads of BC. I probably could’ve gone to 100k miles without a worry.

Yup. Mine was black and shifted badly, down shifted hard too. Also got stock in reverse. Like new again with Motul ATF. I am telling you guys, changing more often is cheap insurance. I don't believe in lifetime fluids. Lifetime means nothing. In reality I think lifetime is about 5 years max. lol How long do owners usually own cars these days? 3-5 years? I'd change more frequently. It's not expensive. $500 max. Every 40-50K+/-
