Trailer Hitch Bolts

I ordered an OEM trailer hitch, part number 7L0-092-105-UA, for '04 Touareg. I have removed the bumper and am ready mount the hitch however, the bolts that were provided arae not the right size. The bolts that were removed are 14mm diameter and the ones provided are twice as longer which is correct but are not the right diameter (maybe 12mm). How can VW provide the wrong bolts? Is there a quick solution to this problem? Thanks for any help.

Just today I went down to my local dealer to buy a hitch and they had one in stock from o4. it was a complete kit with wiring, controller, receiver/ball, bolts and all. apparently the original kit, P/N 7L0 092 101U was superceded by the 7L0 092 105UA. the first kit has the proper bolts in it, but midway through 2004 they changed it to the current 12mm bolts. My best suggestion is to either return your hitch and try to find the old kit, or go to a bolt store and find the required bolts.

P.S proper torque for the 14mm bolts is 70ft.lbs plus 90deg. this is closer to 220ft.lbs, not the 135 for the 12mm bolts.

sorry dude my bolts are 19mm on my 04 V8, 12mm are tiny there is no way they would hold a hitch..............=;

i did the work my self thats how i know.......................

12mm thats funny:p

I went to an engineering supply store and bought some bolts, make sure they are high tensile (as per the supplied 12 mm), factory is 10.9 It might not be possible to buy them this high easily, but try to get as high as possible, mine are 8.8

From an Engineering store they may not be electroplated at this rating, as they are more normally used in engineering. So, either paint the heads with an etch, Galv paint or apply lots of Res-Q-Steel grease to the heads and the shaft that goes through the tow bar. If you don't they will rust and rust spreads.

Also, the VW bolts are threaded all the way down, the ones you will buy will be threaded about half way (or maybe a bit less). This is a small problem and you will need to apply 2 very thick washers to every bolt, 3 even if they are not real thick. DO NOT use spring washers. These are easier to get in galv coating.

If you don't you will run out of thread. Hopefully this will save you a repeat trip to the engineering store.

You should really use 10.9...there is a big difference in strength between 8.8 and 10.9. If anyone can't find it locally, let me know I can source 10.9 and occasionally the very hard to find 12.9 grade hex head (12.9 is normally used with socket caps, not so common with hex head).

By the way, the right bolts are M14x1,5x100 (10.9). Don't buy Cap Head (Allen Key insert) as they don't have as much holding area as proper bolts. Yes I know they look cooler, they just aren't suitable for this application.

From Chuck Cheeze on the vortex

worker at tregcentral.com

"16. Torque the bolts to 135 ft. lbs. with a torque wrench. (This is my best guess based
on previous experiences. No formal spec is given.)"

it worked for him and it worked for me

i think im wrong on the 14mm though

dam it

:)

Agreed, the 14mm 8.8's are not ideal, but are roughly the same strength as the 12's in 10.9, ie about 1 metric tonne per bolt (and there are 8 of them to share the load). So wasn't too worried (until I looked them up again just now)... All this to tow a 750kg trailer ;-)

Next time I am at a proper engineering supply place (i.e. the ones that are not open on a Saturday), will grab some 12.9's or at least the proper 10.9's if they don't have the 12.9's

I wonder why VW stopped doing the 14's after only 9 mths? Also wonder if the Cayenne changed also or if it still uses the 14's? Not like Porsche to put a smaller bolt in anything (in my experience with previous 911's).

You're right the whole bolt changeover thing is very strange...

Needless to say there was much swearing because I had everything off and had to spend most of the weekend looking for bolts I could use. I was able to get bolts at Rockys - had to go to three different stores to get eight bolts. They had 14 x 1.5 x 80 that worked. The grade is 8.8. I hope i am not wrong in assuming that these are close enough to the 12mm 10.9 grade bolts that came with the hitch. For anyone considering doing this I would say it was pretty easy to do.
