Trailer Brake Controller

Hi all I have a 2016 T-rag with 3.0 TDI and tow package in Canada. The local shop told me I need to install an aftermarket brake control module to tow the heavy trailer.

I was just wondering if anyone knows if it is true or not. I'm under the impression that the 7-pin connector should already have trailer brake control built into the tow package.

Thanks

Tow module has nothing to do with trailer brakes, they're 2 completely separate systems and circuits. The blue brake output from the brake controller goes directly to the 7-pin plug, it doesn't interface with the tow module. Tow module is strictly for lights and alarm, and a few electrical tweaks.

I was heavily considering this one. Reviews are great on it. In searching this forum people found that it presented an angle challenge when hooked up with the Touareg. Since the 7 pin is angled down heavily, I also wasn’t comfortable with that fit. Ultimately I’m going with the in cab controller because I want to just reach down for the manual trailer braking in case I’m fighting sway. In that situation I don’t want to have to make sure my phone is open to the app to do the same. You can buy a physical button with the Curt that activates your brakes too. I still want the slider.

Literally need to buy a controller and plug it in that's it. I love tekonsha. Prodigy 3 is great

I recently installed a Redarc Tow Pro in my CR Touareg. I mounted the actual controller on the instrument panel cover under the panel, the diode on the side of the controller, and the control knob on the side of the steering column. Using the connector and cable that came with the Tow Pro, I bought a connector housing from VW (Part no. 1J0 972 872) that mates with the tow controller pre wiring in the car, and just plugged it all in. Standard 1/4 inch spade terminals fit and are retained in that connector. I did have to run my own 12 AWG wire to the rear to connect in turn with the trailer brake blue wire which was in the rear left hand side next to the Trailer module (61) in the car as part of the tow bar installation. I replaced the existing 2 pole connector (only one terminal used) that was there as I didn't feel the pin could handle the brake current.

I made up a trailer "simulator" with resistors to simulate the lights and brakes, and all worked as advertised.

Am happy to go into more details if needed.

I purchased the same Redrac Tow Pro thru Etrailer and it was a bit more then some other models. Ordered the connecting wires from VW. Etrailer has a great video on how to install the unit and it took less than an hour to install.
works great with the trailer brakes and easy to adjust the controller. Install the control knob next to the headlight switch.

That is definitely a nice looking install. How do you like the functionality of the brake controller?

That the onset of a Canadian tuxedo I'm seeing?

JMO I think a simple knob is easier for control and placement next to the light switch would be more convenient to reach, especially for me as I'm 6'2". Didn't go to the gym for leg day but I did downhill mountain bike for a bunch of years.

Do what works for you.
A slider can be modulated.... a button cannot... it's ON or OFF....
I'm also right handed, so your left hand solution would mean I'll crash long before I find the button to press it.
Weird, I was under the impression that the Redarc units button was a potentiometer as well. Maybe someone who has it installed in their vehicle can clarify.

BTW.... don't crash.

They also make modules you plug into the 7pin that fix the LED flashing lights

Yes you'll have to buy the brake controller and harness but it should literally plug right in and work
