2008 Touareg here; so instead of wasting money at the dealer (700 for a pair!), a tire store should be able to replace them on a new set for me? Thanks in advance guys.
Yes. I had an 04 and when the TPMS failed, I bought replacement stems with TPMS from Tire Rack and had them installed on my rims by my local tire shop. Worked fine. I think I paid (2 yrs ago) around $100 each (around $400 total for 4).

TPMS Cost

The fidelity platinum warranty is not covering the cost to pay for my tpms, which have gone bad. Apparently, the tpms battery is dying and you can't replace the battery. One needs to replace the entire tpms system because the battery is somehow a part of the tpms unit!?!? The cost to replace 2 of them is $700. I am debating whether those tpms are really worth it.

Anybody have suggestions?
If you want to retain the TPMS sensors, there are aftermarket solutions that are much less money. You should be able to get a tire shop to break down the tire to change the sensor for less than $20 each. (Labor) I have TPMS sensors advertised in the commercial section that are far less than the dealer option. You would save about $500 of the dealer price.

i just want to remove it. i can tell if my tire is flat. how can you remove/ shut off the tps sys?
If you do a search for TPMS, there are some good posts on this forum that explain how to use VAG-COM to add the "turn off" option on the Dash Display. It is a matter of recoding the module. I tried with my Treg and was not successful, you may have better luck.

I just pulled the advertisement on tire rack's website and it says these Hella's TPMS Cannot be used as a replacement for Original Equipment sensors.
The Orange Electronic sensors work. I have all four of mine replaced with them. They even have the original serial numbers. They are high quality and are a fraction of the cost of new.

My 05 T1 has the same problem and I selected the TPMS off in the MFD. How do I know if the problem is with the wheel sensors or with the unit under the dash? Pointless paying for sensors if the controll unit is faulty....will the VAg show where the problem is?

Yes, you will need to scan it to find out for sure what is wrong.

The programmer I rent will show battery life, serial number, temperature and pressure. You could choose to rent my programmer or get a shop to scan each wheel and verify that they are all broadcasting, that would eliminate a sensor problem. Even if you find that you have a bad sensors, you could still have a module problem. My 2004 had all 4 sensors below 15% battery life. Chances are that your sensors are getting low too. I was lucky. Once I replaced all the sensors, The system works fine. Your MFD display should show which sensor is bad as well. You could rotate that wheel and see if the MFD shows the bad sensor on a different corner. I hope that information helps, Mike
