I am a new owner of a touareg TDI with 8500 miles.
My Real (Calculated) MPG is around 23.5

My daily commute 122 miles driving Freeway at 70mph
I was expecting better mph

What are other members experiences?

I can get around 575 to 600 per tank

Well, the MFD said 29.9 mpg, but my manual calculation, top-off to top- off, was 27.0 mpg. The first fill-up was @ $3.79/ gal., with the second @ $3.75/ gal., not cheap, but better than surrounding states. This was done yesterday on a trip up I-81 from SW Virginia to MD. Most of the trip was at 75 mph (5 over the limit:p) with little traffic, but lots of hills. Luggage for 2 people and a case of wine were in the back.:) Perhaps the same trip with no cargo, and following the speed limit, I may have been able to net another .2 or .3. Overall, not too shabby.

Just finished the first 2500 miles on the new 2012 TDI Exec. Average speed after 1000 miles breaking in was 78 mph. Handles like a dream . Plenty of torque. Four people. Luggage to the gills. 30-48 degrees F . 26.1 mpg actual.
Flawless in everyday so far. Still trying to figure out all the features. Heated steering wheel and front & rear seats worth the price. Sound system primo. Navigation guide a little stubborn ... Takes too long to recalculate. But that's the German part I suppose. Dogmatic.
Great car. Much nicer than the GL 320CDI we sold to get this one. More later. Gonna change oil at 5000 mile intervasl for first 30,000.

Just passed 30 for the first time in my 2011 lux, actual average 31.6 mpg, 68 clocked average speed, 80ish max, 60ish min...got 27 on 100 miles there, 31.6 on the way back....right around 9100 total miles

85,000 miles? How did you manage that so fast?
But am glad to see the numbers. I have only 11,500 miles on my 2010 TDI, but am driving the beast to California via the SW next month & back in March, so your mileage is encouraging.
Have been driving mainly city roads lately, & those numbers ain't so good.

Best I did between York, PA and SLC was 25 mpg not loaded or towing. I do admit I was above the speed limit the whole way as well. So really not that bad imo. I have noticed something though that has now had me looking for stations that sell it is bio gives you slightly better mileage. I had two places I filled up when I towed my trailer and noticed a 2 mpg increase with bio over regular diesel.

Yeti, Thanks for the info about bio. I'll keep an eye out. Are the stations that sell bio well-marked?
And, yes, one of the keys to mileage as good as rlw's must be keeping the speed down, something I have a hard time doing, especially when trying to make time cross country. Usually slow down when the scenery gets better well west of the Mississippi.

No, unfortunately they are not that well marked. They typically are labeled B5 which is VW's limit for our TDI's, but I have a local here in York that does B2.

no bio use for me, but FWIW I notice slightly better economy using Petro-Can fuels vs other brands...this is the case in all 3 of my vehicles so its not just a VW thing. Have you noticed any brand differences?

What in the bio do you think is causing increased mileage? is it the added lubricity or the Increased Cetane? The actual Energy content of Bio is actually lower than ULSD.
I can't answer that, just know what I saw when calculating my mileage. Both times it was B5 or so the pump said. Beyond that I have no clue why it was better, but was.

I'm new to this club having just bought a 2011 Lux TDI last week, so I'm a noob to the Touareg world :). I was returning from my in-laws this weekend and was curious what true highway mpg I'd get. This was Glendora to mid Orange County, so about 40 miles and an elevation drop of about 500 ft along the 210/57/I5 route so a little bit of a downhill run but certainly not a 'grade'. There's a few hills along that route. Obviously a small data sample given the distance and the 'aid' of losing an aggregate 500 ft over 40 miles. I reset the avg mpg upon hitting the on ramp onto the 210. Speed was pretty constant 65-70. As we exited the I5 in OC the MFD read 38.5 avg mpg. Now I know a return trip I'd be climbing that 500ft and likely to see in the mid to high 20s, but wow, still I never thought a vehicle of this size and overall power could be so good on mpg.

Don't be QUITE so enthusiastic about the mpgs until you calibrate your computer with your tank fill ups. Do it like this: 'zero fill' - with the car level (or in the same spot it will be at your regular fill place) - fill the diesel tank, wait for the foam to subside and fill TO THE BRIM of the filler neck. Record the mileage.
Next fill up [after a couple hundred miles or whatever]: car level, record the 'mpg since fill' according to the car computer, fill to the brim again, record mileage and the number of gallons shown on the pump. Make sure the tank is filled to the brim the same way as before. Record second mileage.
Subtract first mileage figure from the second and divide the result by the number of gallons in the second fill. This is your actual mileage. Compare this number with the car computer result you recorded before the second fill. The difference is the computer error. On mine it is typically about 2 mpg 'more optomistic' than actual.
If you still end up above 30 mpg (according to the pump data) you are doing VERY WELL.:joy:

Wondering if people rely on the MPG from the MFI or by keeping a log? I do both and on every TReg I've had (V8 and two TDIs), the MFI version is better than the calculated log.

I wonder, since the cutoff valve at the gas pump seems to be randomly different every time I fuel up if this is making the calculated log MPG off since I have no way of knowing if I am +/- a little in the tank after filling up?

If the Treg uses a flow meter to calculate MPG, I wonder if this would be more accurate?

1700 Miles into my 2012 TDI I'm averaging 24.28MPG in sometimes below freezing weather, mountainous terrain (foothills), mix of city commuting and highway driving, driving normally not trying to get good gas mileage.

Manual calculations will always be more accurate. Even if top-off levels vary slightly from pump to pump.

But I've found these differences to generally be negligable. And they always balance out through time.

As for the MFI, I believe it reads from the MAF sensor output.

I've logged about 100's of 1000's of km always filled to the brim. I find it's definitely more accurate with manual logging this way as I can sometimes add an extra 5-7 litres of fuel once it clicks once with most my cars. This way I know exactly how much fuel I used. Certain diesel fuel brands i find foam more than others. This probably has more to do with the dispensing pump than anything else. Diesel doesn't expand the same way gasoline does so I don't think your doing anything to hurt your vehicle. I put nearly 600,000 on a passat diesel that way and 500,000 on the NB TDI. Never once had an issue with filling to the brim.
