Hi Grant
As you remember almost 2 years ago I posted this unfortunate chain of events -- (1) 2014 7P Ran away from me | Club Touareg Forum -- I have since worked out that the reason that I had difficulty unhitching the van was due to the issue as described or at least similar, which I also experience in the replacement vehicle, although I am used to it the better half still finds it rather alarming and since she does not drive and is mechanically challenged comments that at times it is frightening, fortunately she was at home when the previous incident occurred.

I have therefore adopted a practice of when parking and unhitching I just jack the van up fairly high with the suspension, lower the jockey wheel jockey wheel, start the vehicle and just nudge back perhaps up to an inch then drop the suspension and the tow-ball just slips out.

The road outside our house and driveway is quite steep - to very steep incline. I seem to experience the occurrence in about 10 - 15 secs and only when facing downhill, facing uphill it does not appear to behave the same way. The effect is similar with or without the van attached - I have not checked the airgap yet vehicle is going in for service on Monday so I will get them to check it.

@meggsy yes I recall your post and wondered if maybe there was some association. At this point we have been on the road touring with the caravan since February. All too often the little lurch happens as the wife is getting out of the car, occasionally whilst hooking up or parking up.
Unsettling is surely true, but it should not move at all if the electronic park brake is on

I just got new brakes done at the dealer which included an EPB adaptation and it behaves the same way as it did before, I hate the amount of slack when I let off the brake after engaging the EPB. My mom’s 2011 CC had an EPB and my parents driveway is on a decent grade. That would not lurch. My Treg just has so much movement as I let off the brake after engaging the EPB. It feels like it’s not doing its job, but I’ve put it in Neutral and engaged the EPB, then let go and it holds it on a hill. Whatever.

I had a further thought on this issue, I am wondering if the Hill Hold plays a part here. You cannot own a Touareg without noticing the hill hold function especially when reversing out of a park onto an incline.
I wonder if the Hill Hold which seems to use the main brakes is actually holding the car for a short period before releasing which is when the slack is taken up and the EPB takes over?

If you have hill hold enabled and come to a stop and park, the hydraulic brakes will hold (hill hold) and the parking brake will apply when engaged. The hydraulic brakes (hill hold) will release shortly after the parking brake engages.

My 2015 moved slightly too when parked on an incline. I adjust the gap up two clicks and that seems to have solved the issue.

Not an answer, but mine has been doing this since the day I brought it home from the dealership new. I had them check over the function several times and have always been told all is working as it should. As I said, it's not an explanation. I don't like it, and it is a pain when hooking and unhooking the van (I now wait for about 30 seconds to make sure it's not going to move before I get out) but I am used to it, as disconcerting as it was at the beginning.

It is normal and pretty common across most automatic vehicles.
Just go to neutral when you park up, pull the hand/park brake, then go to park.
if what you are referring to is the normal movement as soon as you release the brake pedal then yes that is.

This movement occurs some time (30s) after releasing the brake pedal normally after alighting from the car

Grant, have same issue with my 2016 v6 tdi, nsw Australia. Have to do similar thing when unhitching 2.5t van, except after its done its lurch I use chocks on van wheels when on any grade, then move car forward or back quarter to half inch to unload ball before unhitching. Issue alarms wife but I'm now used to it. Still, I always look at dash to see epb on and always in park. Am yet to raise with euro technician but this will remind me to do so next service. Will report back if anything worthwhile. Cheers, Mike
