One example from my BMW - the crankcase vent system clogs on these things under certain conditions and as a result the engine pulls a lot of oil through the intake. You can easily diagnose it by looking at the oil filler cap and if you see a lot of gunk, then the CCV is the likely culprit.
When I read the original post, I thought "CCV" !

Have you investigated this to it's fullest?

(Temorarily) disconnect the vent pipe from the turbo inlet tract. Plug the inlet tract, vent the CCV pipe to atmosphere or stick it into a make-shift catch can.

Drive far enough to test the result.

Still didn't.. I changed the oil at 123000 km,now I have 134000 on the clock.. I can still see the oil on the dipstick, but it is pretty low..I'll have to change it now and see how much oil did consume..

Still didn't sort out the problem. Used the spec oil from VW dealership and it still consumes oil. Intake manifold looks clean, exhaust pipe clean too. No white or blue smoke. Asked the TDI forum, they gave me same advices as you all. 152 000km's on the clock. Changed the oil every 7000-9000 km's. I know its a minor problem because I never get a message 'oil level low', only 'check oil' and when i open the hood it desappears in about 200-300 km's and then it starts all again. I mean when get up preppared for a longer trip, relaxed, cheerful everything goes bad when it beeps and the message 'check oil' flashes on the dashboard.

i think i am having a similar problem - my oil light comes on, i check it and it has no oil or very minimal oil and then i add 4 litres and after 1000 miles the light comes on again. If i check it at about 800/900 miles then there is oil on the dipstick so its very suddenly that it disappears - do I not have enough oil in the first place??? I don't think its normal for a car to consume so much oil, although it has always been heavy on oil - no leaks and no smoke......I am worried I am damaging something else.....

My consumes about 1,5 Litres on 10 000kms.. Not like yours, thats too much.. that means you spend more on oil than on diesel.

hi guys,

i was told that every 100km or 1000km (i can't remember which now) the sensor checks the engine oil level and reports to the MFD.

The problem on the T1s is the engine oil level sensor is TOO sensitive (inclines etc can report to mfd)

The question is that the treg is either
1. Consuming more oil than normal so engine needs investigating...
2. There is a leak somewhere (sump drain plug, seals etc?)
3. Faulty oil sensor (it’s very complex how it calculates the oil level to do with heating/cooling/weight etc etc)
4. The engine oil is trapped in the sump/upper part of the engine and therefore gives wrong reading to the sensor when it calculates the oil level.
5. It is actually low as it genuinely consumed it (towing etc).

I had similar problem as described when i had oil service 8.9L was put in but the "check oil level" light came on not many miles after. It "reset" itself after i opened the bonnet but came on again after another 100 or 1000km. Its something to do with the bonnet pin sensor which resets that specific warning (i was told it). Anyway I checked engine oil and it was on Min. I wanted a second opinion so I took it to a dealer and they put it on a level surface and checked it 5 times putting in (dip, wipe, rest repeat x5) in addition i also read opening the filler cap has a affect as on the mytreg forum someone suggested there maybe an airlock etc (i think) on the R5 engines.

I was never able to prove if the oil service actually put in 8.9L or not. One thing i would say it does consume more then average engine oil that is a fact. More then my BMW 330D.

I have been told too about the too sensitive sensor.. And I know its nothing that will damage the engine, but it is pretty anoying.. I have driven with the oil which is in the engine now about 9000 miles, and after 3000 miles till 9000 miles the message check oil appeared more than 10 times.. I added some oil, at 8000miles but it wasn't on minimal,,it was in the middle on the level surface.. I added a bottle (1Litre) and last week another half..now its a bit under MAX on the deep stick. I also heared about the Crafter or transporter 2.5TDI engine also consumes oil, so since thats a same engine thats normal as they say in dealership.. And if you are a bit heavy on the throthle, like me, that helps too..
