I am new to the 3.0 tdi engine, so I am unsure if this is a normal sound. It is the tick tick tick sound in the video. Normal ?

Ok, so I can't seem to post a video...
So, it is a steady tick tick sound at idle.

What ambient temperatures do you have at cold start? The Webasto fuel pump makes a similar sound, but that only comes on at 5 degrees C and below. A dual mass flywheel can also make similar sound.

Do you have a manual or an auto transmission? Do you have any fault codes? Is the noise coming from under the car or from the engine compartment? Can't you pinpoint where it's coming from?

Mine ticks at cold start for 2-3 minutes then goes away. I’m trying a different motor oil next week just to see if it helps. I had a 2000 Ford truck that did something similar and when I went to mobile one synthetic the sound went away. I think what helped my Ford truck is synthetic tends to stick or hang on internal engine components longer after shut down than dino oil but since I’m already running a different brand synthetic I doubt it helps anything this time around. The strange thing is my Treg didn’t do it when I first bought it at 30k miles. It’s a 2016 and started somewhere around 50 or 60,000 miles and has 93k now. Honestly I wonder if all the emissions crap that recirculates all the junk from the exhaust gases back into the engine has anything to do with premature wear. This is the function of the egr system. Between that and the DPF causing increased engine pressures the whole thing sucks in my opinion.

Hi Egg,

How many miles on your tdi?
When was the last oil/filter change?
Are the engine internals relatively clean?

Watch the results from the below YT video. It may work for you.

After a flush I also use 20 % Lucas Synthetic oil stabilizer in the new oil and have had no problems in various vehicles US and German since the mid 80s.

You might want to try a couple of flushs as per the video to see if that clears things up for you.

I had never used Totally Awesome before watching the video but have used it first on my wife's Auris D4D 2 litre with 150,000 miles.

It didn't have a service stamp for the last eight years. I followed the video annd used TA at ratio of 20 % with cheap semi synthetic oil and a fresh filter.

I idled it for 20 minutes then new synthetic oil (Magnatec) and filter.. She has done 2000 miles since (all short journeys too as she is close to work) and the oil is still clear and transparent with minimal carbon suspension visible. Not bad for a diesel.

Hope it helps.

Sounds like an exhaust leak to me.
My car will occasionally make a pinging sound if you are outside of it. It comes from the passenger side. Doesn't sound like this mechanical tapping or leaking sound though

Hi all,

My ticking sound was under the steering wheel (UK) so it's right hand drive. I thought it was compressor related but it stopped making the noise when the failing alternator was replaced.

I've no idea if it was the compressor making the noise but it hasn't returned in the 12 plus months since the alternator was swapped out.

Hope this helps.

My 2010 CATA TDI makes the exact same noise. I used to think it was a problem, but realized it is the AdBlue injection ticking away. I can't pinpoint if it's all the time or just intermittent, but I know that the post-fix vehicles do it more, which goes inline with them injecting more urea to balance out some of the emissions
