My used 2013 TDI is due a fuel filter replacement. The dealer wants an arm and a leg to do it. Any cheaper options.

DIY. But you'll need VAGCOM to run the fuel pump.

It's an easy job, but if you prefer to have it done, any decent auto or diesel mechanic should charge no more than 0.5 hours to do it for you. Buy a German filter (Mann, Hengst) online or from a parts house for about half what the dealer charges. IdParts will ensure you have the correct one for your T3. The filter is in the engine compartment, left rear behind the air filter. Do not remove the fuel lines from the fuel filter canister. Be careful removing the top of the fuel filter canister since it will be really full. Diesel is harmful to rubber but not explosive like gasoline, so wrap a rag around the filter housing to catch drips. I use a turkey baster to suck out some fuel before removing the filter. You will also need a torx driver, T-25 I think, to remove the screws holding the top down. The O-ring makes a tight seal, so some force is necessary to pull out the old filter and push the new one in. Cross tighten the screws holding the top down being careful not to over-torque.

If you don't have VCDS (Vag-Com) you can refill the canister by turning on the ignition without pressing the brake pedal which will run the electric fuel pump briefly. Do this three times, waiting 30 seconds between runs, and it should start normally. You will need VCDS to turn off the Service Now! display on the instrument panel if it is on.

I didn't know the lift pumps ran with just the ignition on? Was not like this on the 2.0L TDI. If so, that's great.

There was a workaround with the 2.0L to jumper relay terminals to do the filter change without VCDS.

Otherwise, yes you "can" replace and run without VCDS, but are taking a huge chance in premature wear of your high pressure fuel pump.

I'm not so sure the lift pump runs with just the ignition. Pretty sure you'll need VCDS.

This only applies to TDI's. I have no idea on how to change the fuel filter on a gasser. Good chance you can find the procedure in this forum or VWVortex. I greatly prefer VCDS for refilling the fuel filter, but have used the ignition on one occasion and it worked. Obviously not a scientific conclusion. In any case, be really careful to depressurize the fuel system before opening a line.

VAG COM. The communication program that VW developed to control and diagnose vehicles. It connects to your OBD II port and you can read malfunction codes, change programming for certain things, and for this specific scenario, turn on your lift pumps.

Fule filter part number

Hi guys
Just wondering if someone could point me in the right direction on the diesel filter part number for 3.0 TDI CRCA (Touareg 7P model) engine. I bought a filter and the parts shop gave me MANN PU8007. I have checked the MANN online catalogue and this is the listed for engine code CRCA and the year of the car which is 2012. However when I was about to replace it I noticed the height of the MANN is actually shorter. I checked the part number of the one that was in the car and it was 7NO 127 177B (VW original filter). Apart from the height the diameter and other things matched.

I took a chance and changed it and initially it took a little longer to start ... say 10 seconds of continuous cranking. After that the next 3-4 starts took about couple of seconds longer before the engine started. I have now driven the car for 2-3 days and it starts fine. I cannot notice any difference in the start, drive or the power.

I have checked the MANN catalogue for the cross reference part numbers for PU 8007 and it shows 7P6 127 177 and 7P6 127 177 A. Then I tried looking up part number 7NO 127 177B which was the old filter and it does not show any results.

To summarise the issue, PU 8007 MANN filter is shorter than the original filter I had in the car (7NO 127 177B) and I see no difference in the start or the drive / power. Can (or will) this cause any issues or damages to the car is my question?

Thanks a lot for your valuable input.

Hi kumuda T when i change fuel filters before i put the top back on i fill the filter canister up with diesel from a clean container this illiminates the air pocket which makes it hesitate on initial start up after replacing the filter i have been doing this on my golf diesel for many years and now on my 7P v6 toureg 2014

If the new filter is not the correct height then it is probably not sealing and as such may not be filtering anything. Do not chance it, I suggest strongly that you replace it with the correct element.

Issue clarified

Thanks hedditch.

I wrote to Mann technical manager and they confirmed that both filters (PU 8007 and PU8008) fits the Touareg. The difference is that PU8008 is recommended for Passat and has a better quality filtering material. The filtering material traps finer particles so keeps the diesel pump cleaner. The filtering material in PU8007 is not as good as PU8008. Therefore I will be using PU8008 in the future.

To the point that hedditch made, the filter sits on a lip therefore there is no risk of not filtering. The diameter of the holes are exactly the same for both filters hence both filters fit the Toareg (this is 7P I am referring to).

The PU8008 is about a half inch taller than the PU8007. Does it fit in there okay? Have you been using them since then, without any issues? Trying to decide if I should try the 8008 or not.

Here it looks like they still have both, but added /1 after the number and changed the seal up on the top a bit. With the finer filtering material, I was just concerned about it becoming too restrictive sooner in its life and needing replacement sooner. That's not an issue I guess?

I'm about to change my 2013 Treg TDI fuel filter for the first time. Looking at the workshop manual it seems to show that there are 2 gaskets to replace with the new filter. I have the bigger one around the rim. Is the smaller one in this diagram actually there? Don't really want to open it up if I don't have everything I need.

I just changed mine a couple of months ago and I don't remember there being 2 o'rings. Mine looked exactly like this.
