I tow a caravan and no part of the van or hitch is in the way of the tailgate opening normally. Can the feature that detects you are towing and hence disables the electronic opening of the tailgate, be turned off or programmed out?

Not without the computer software that connects up to all VW's…
Why did VW do this? It's a ridiculous bit of software programming, especially as it can't be disabled via user settings.
You might be able to get a dealer or VW repairer or perhaps even someone on these forums to do it for you, if you do then pls let us know as I too have the same problem - my caravan A frame comes nowhere near to the tailgate...

This has got to be one of the dumbest design "features" of all time. It should be a simple case of enabling/disabling the feature from the touch screen, but it is much more complex than that.
