Sudden Braking!!! Accident

I was driving through an intersection yesterday when the car in front of me slowed down [we were not going more than 25miles/hour].

I applied the brakes [not too fast, or hard] just to slow down and my Touareg came to a sudden and abrupt halt; even when my foot was no longer on the brake. The car behind me slammed into me.

Please help!! I am assuming that the brake assist kicked in.

Has anyone else experienced this problem.

It sounds like the brake assist did kick in... and I wouldn't call it a problem.

It is a problem because Brake Assist is supposed to kick in only when you make a sudden movement to your brake or steering[?], not when you are just trying to slow down.

This seems very unusual.
The guy who hit you was at fault for following too close however it sounds like you're giving him a good case to blame it on you! #-o

Be very careful what you tell your insurance company or you'll be at fault and if the system is working normally and you just thought you "normally" applied the brakes then you loose all the way around.

If your treg brakes normally now and it was only that one instance your likely not going to repeat the "fault" and you really should be so eager to blame the Treg as being at fault...just my 2 cents...

Thanks, my worry is with the Brake Assist activating under gentle braking. This is very, very dangeous. Brake Assist is only supposed to activate under emergency situations.

There is no reason for it to kick-in during a gentle slow down in the middle of an intersection.

P.S. This is the second time it has kicked in inavertentily. I have ownde other cars with Brake Assist and this has never happened.

I don't know if it was brake assist as much as it is just the brakes are real touchy at slower speeds. I have notice this in stop and go traffic myself. I attribute it to the fact that these brakes are just damn good. Have you ever really looked at the front caliper and compare it to other cars? There is some serious stopping power there. Nothing wrong with your car other then the damage in the rear now. The guy who hit you is at fault and I would not as was suggested earlier bring up your doubts to the insurance company. It will all fall on you then.

Guys, thank you for your help.

The problem is not just with really good Brakes. My foot was no longer on the Brake Pedal when the Touareg kept Braking.

I was trying to GENTILY slow down from 25miles/hour to 20miles/hour when the Brake Assist kicked in [in the middle of an intersection] and brought my car to a screeching halt.

Dude, get thee to a dealer - post haste - and get it checked out.
