Going to replace my stepper motor in the weeks to come. Does anyone have a detailed step by step process of removing and installing. I also need to know the exact location of the motor. Anything will help thanks.

Go on line and google pictures of the Touareg stepper motor.

It's easy to see and find under the car.

I think there's just the connection and couple or three nuts to undo. Not a big job at all.

You don't say why are replacing it.

I have the same issue on mine rear difflock stepper motor - it seems as if there is torque build up when turning and a grating noise coming from the rear diff - undid the connector off the motor and the noise has stopped, but have to deal with two warning lights on the dash.

Is there an aftermarket spare for this - part numbers etc - please as the local dealer is asking me about $1000 for this motor???

No aftermarket that I have ever heard of.Have you any European parts importers to call?

It is easy to change - no need to use a dealer.

NOT a good idea to run the car without it!

I'm sure if someone could identify who is the O.E manufacturer of the stepper motor, we could then trace down where to buy this without the local $tealership. That said, there are some good and fair priced VW parts departments if you go to the commercial classifieds section on this forum. I do my shopping at Capitol Volkswagen when OEM is preferable or the only recourse over O.E, because they are on the ball.

I replaced mine and got my part from 1stvw. I think i payed around 375 for the stepper motor. Its easy to replace. I know if you look around on the web you can find a picture of one and its location. Basically if you crawl under the passenger side and look at the transfer case you will see a little motor sticking out. Take off the 4 bolts, pop off the electrical connection and you will probably have to pry off the old motor from its shaft. Be careful not to apply to much torque as you may bend the shaft it slides into. Then if you look at the shaft you will see a indent. Line up the indent on the motor and re-install.

Thanks for the reply's guys - When I undid the cable I saw that it cannot be a difficult job to replace the motoer myself - I did the propshaft myself a while back. ..... if only I can find the OEM version or direct replacement cheaper - perhasp I should improt from the US or Europe.

noobytoogy you mentioned it is not a good idea to run without the motor - can you elaborate on the reason? I did notice the abs light coming on - does it affect the braking performance at all? Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

You are at risk of damaging the rest of the very expensive transmission [US$8K for a gearbox].

The stepper motor is a gear reduction drive attached to the transfer case that allows for a differential between the two axles whenever the system requires, such as when you are backing up or turning hard in a low speed situation.

If this were my car I'd pay the price and get the part - and park it up until I'd done it.

Hi noobytoogy - thanks for the advice. I did not undo the transfer case motor, but only the cable to the rear stepper motor as I have rear difflock as well - am I heading for disaster in my diff having it disconnected? I do have two warning lights illuminated though .... ESP and ABS.

Ah, you only gave us part of the story!

The rear diff lock is a much rarer beast.

I'd still park it up and get the part pronto. Your brakes and the electronic stabilisation programme are both being compromised.

The rear stepper is more difficult to replace, diff oil willhe lost in the process. It is best to drain the oil and fill with a new lot. The rear diff oil is quite expensive.

I haven't changed my rear diff stepper, but it's on the cards.

I do not have a locker or motor, but I had a similar clunking noise from the center diff. When I asked about it at the dealer, they found a software update for the vehicle that does something with that stepper motor. I presume it modifies the way the clutches are applied when distributing torque front to back. Could there be a similar update for the rear diff? Anyway, my clunking noise is gone.

I know this thread is old, but here goes:
we got the warning light showing the differential (just like on the dial to select High / Low / Locking ... this dial was also flashing)
took to shop & they replaced the step motor (this is less than a week after having the rear drive shaft replaced -- the existing one had foam zip-tied to it to try and mask the sound)

so after that gigantic kick in the crotch, we thought to be all set until the next morning the warning light and flashing dial came back - calling the shop this morning but i'm about ready to drive this thing off a cliff, which sucks cause i really love this truck but repairs are getting crazy

2006 v8 touareg with 120 K miles (also just had the 120,000 mile service done) ... i'm trying to take good care of this new-to-us truck but jeebus

cheers

So, inner ted, what is the update? How was the problem rectified? I have the same problem now and i do not believe that it is the battery.
