Squealing sound

My 2004 V8 Touareg has developed a "squealing sound". It does not always happen, and only happens when the engine warms up. It sounds like either a belt noise or a bearing in an alternator or air conditioner pump. It stops when the car is at idle and starts again intermittently when the car picks up speed.

Any ideas?

Same happens to my 2004 V8 for a couple of weeks now, and also only when the engine warms up. Due to the engine noise I can only hear it in idle, e.g. when stopping at the traffic light.
I was not able yet to locate exactly where the squaling is coming from, but my impression is that it is coming from the area where the alternator sits.

Any advice is appreciated.

Im buying a new serpentine belt and Goodyear Belt Tensioner....I should be getting it next week. Install will probably be on Discoveries Day when I get back from vacation...I'll let you folks know if that solves my screaching noise. Wish me luck. :D

Hey phml, I hope you enjoyed your vacation in the meantime.

As in your case, my VW techs told me that the squaling sound is caused by the serpentine belt. I don't know why, but I am not fully convinced about that.
Did the replacement of the serpentine belt helped in your case ?
Is there a DIY you can recommend ?

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.

I remember the thread about the PCV valve, and at that time I already found out that the V8 engines (AXQ) don't have this valve.

@wvicary,
I guess you mean the PCV valve too. Or do you mean something else ? If yes, do you know where is it located on a V8 ?

@GoozieNZ,
if you mean any prop shafts outside the engine, than I can exclude it, because I hear the squealing noise mostly when I am in idle and standing at a traffic light.
