Sport steering wheel for my TDI ;)

Okay, so as another part of my "building a custom R-line TDI" I wanted to have a sport steering wheel. I think the factory 4-spoke is a little bland. I came across an option that uses a steering wheel from a Bentley Continental GT part # 3W0-419-650. This one bolts right into a Touareg and reuses the factory airbag and multifunction switches. It is not the greatest in design but makes for a nice easy mod... the Bentley steering wheel is full leather including the hub (what they call Beluga which is only slightly darker than our Anthracite), has a thicker rim and thumb grips built in. Here are some pics to check out.

Not heated, but my Touareg did not have that option anyways :(

There might be a version of the Bentley steering wheel that is heated though.

Just posted this steering wheel for sale in the classifieds if anyone is interested. :)

Absolutely nothing, except that is it not as nice as my new custom carbon fiber steering wheel I just had made. ;)

Well Verdeo, they claim it added +5 HP but I am having trouble feeling it from my butt dyno... ;)

Actually, the carbon fiber was done to match my new CF door and dash trim so it is just cosmetic and part of the theme I have for my vehicle. But, the sport style grips are very nice and since people use the steering wheel 100% of the time they drive it is a modification I can use daily. The new steering wheel and the sport seat upgrade are very noticeable when driving in a good way.

Please remember, I built my own show vehicle using my Touareg so some of these modifications are to support judging at the shows I attend. Most of this stuff probably does not make sense to people but in the show circuit it does... and it makes me happy. :)

David,

Tongue in cheek...my comment. I will say that I cringe at most of the mods done these days, including many of the vehicles on this site. Yours is a huge exception. I find your 20" wheels very sophisticated and the rest of the work tastefully executed.

I'm just getting to an age where all of this modding gets boring. I used to bust my butt in my younger days...and when I look back at all the time and money I spent...I wonder what the heck I was thinking.
I bought this Treg with the idea it was just spectacular as it came. There are many more comfort items than I could have imagined a couple of decades ago...so it is a treat just as it is....except for the damn sound system.
So, again...congrats on your Treg. I like it!

Thanks Verdeo... to be honest I think this Touareg project is part of my mid-life crisis. I was heavy into the car show scene in my younger days and now seem to be getting back into it again with my Touareg. LOL

Just finished up the Water Werks German Car Show in SF and placed first and also took Best of Show for Wheels. Now I just signed up for Dub Fest in SoCal later this month. Looks like I am back into it again and loving it. :)

I don't agree with mid-life crisis non sense at all. I think SOME people use that term, to be polite to others to bugger off.

At the risk at sounding like I'm rationalizing, keeping either a second sports car or modding your daily driver, or BOTH, at anything past the age of say 35, not anly allows one to stay young, feel young, but more often than not, people notice that you look younger as well! The boy in you staying alive if you will. I have seen 45 year olds that literally look 30, as they drive to the river to go fishing or boat riding or to the local tennis court in their modded out ride. Keeps the boy in you alive in more ways than one ;). Hardly a mid-life crisis?

On a flip side, I see 35 year olds that look like 50, all stressed out and TIRED, no energy, driving their Nissan Verza, paying their taxes like good citizens, and finger pointing and shaking their fists in the air in disbelief, at anything that is not considered normal and mainstream.

Am I over generalizing here, or painting it black and white? Yes probably, but I'm just sayin' and calling them as I see them.

I think you have a lot of nerve to proclaim that kind of crap. Talk to me when you are more like 67, young man. In the meantime, try to do something meaningful with your life......or maybe get a life first.

vwdude,
You are posting on a forum in which I was commenting on tricking out Tregs to David. If you can follow above you...you will then see that he mentioned his mid-life crisis. You then followed up with some inane crap about same crisis. How old are you 20?

I think this is a case where the internet does not show a person's true emotion/state of mind. VWDude was certainly not being rude to anyone as far as I can tell. He was just stating in a rather elaborate fashion.....that we are just as young as we think we are......and modding projects that kind of thinking. At-Least that's all I took away from his post.

Back on topic, that CF wheel looks rather busy...if that's the right word. Are all the contours designed with a purpose? I guess a pic of you holding the wheel would answer the question.

Precisely what I meant. The spark was triggered when 2010TDI quoted mid life crisis to rationalize his work to someone, as has been the case by a others on here as of late. Even when some members PM me their mods, they seem to feel the need to self explain this madness to me even. Although not always the exact words "mid life crisis" are used, I'm under the impression some people seem to have a complex of sorts, to justify their hobby, which is to customize their vehicle. Nothing wrong with that. My ex BMW engine that was modified to over 400 horse, by an extremely well known "guru" by the name of Mr. McHenry, in the BMW CC of America, at the age of 70. Driving in his M3, modded of course with a M5 engine! Does this have mid life crisis written on it? Do you know what he would say if he heard my question.

Anyways sadly he passed away short few years ago, he will be missed. Shining example of youth and energy to the end. Different strokes for different folks I'll finish off.

To Verdeo yes I'm 20 (wink).

VWdud,

I can always count on you to yap on and on with very little substance. Perhaps that is what you mean by being "youthful".
Just keep on taking up bandwith as it appears to make you important.

Very sad.

Wow, did not expect this type of response...

The "mid-life crisis" was more of a joking reference to doing things again that you did in your younger days (like modifying cars and attending car shows). I definitely do not think of it as a negative and also believe wholeheartedly about feeling "young" is not about your actual age. (By the way, I am 43)

None of this by the way was to explain my actions to anyone. I build my cars to keep me happy. Of course, I enjoy when others like what I have done but I still do it my way and in a style I prefer (Hence my choice in keeping red calipers... LOL).

Now, back on topic. Yes, I can see that the picture might make the steering wheel look a little "busy". But if you were to hold it you would see it matches a persons grip 100%. A very comfortable design similar to what you see in higher end sports cars. Officially DCT Motorsports refers to that as the "sport grip option" which is just one of many they offer but is very popular with the Porsche and Ferrari set. I will try to get a picture with one of my "old wrinkly hands" to show the benefit. :)

LOL!!! :D

Thanks for the support guys, and my apologies to 2010TDI, that the chemistry between verdeo and myself, may have inadvertently taken your beautiful ride's thread, to the radar screen of the mods.

Verdeo, if you do not like what I have to say, simply add me to your ignore list on the left side of the page list of options and save yourself the trouble. ;) Also this is the exterior mods section of the forum, and having read a few of your posts from the past elsewhere, it begs the question why not simply ignore the modifications section as well? A quick history of your comments, e.g., like commenting to someone that the squirrels will appreciate your work in regards to polishing his exhaust, was out of place, but everyone let you slide with that one, and we all happily carried on in good faith.

2010TDI, so what you are saying about the steering wheel you have elected to go with, is more about ergonomics, than the look.
I can see that now, and I have to be honest, I was a bit skeptical buy the "busy" look at first.

#28 ·
Actually, it is both... the carbon fiber is for the theme (Tuner style) and matches the parts on the dash, door, and center console. The sport grips are both cosmetic and ergonomic. I took a few pics to show the point..

Normal hand grip steering...

And my personal favorite in traffic, finger steering...

All of these modes are much more comfortable with the new steering wheel design. :)
