Speedometer and mileage

Hello All,

I am new to this forum and recent owner of Treg 05 v8. I bought the car at a decent price due to speedo and odo not working and also fuel gauge jumping around . I have love for the car but wondering if anyone else experience similar issues and had success in fixing this.

The cruise control is also not working. I have checked all the fuses on both sides all seems to be good.

Checked the cam shaft sensor and that seems to be good, but was not able to locate the speed sensor.
Anyone knows where that is located and how I can fix.

ran a scan getting codes : P0501 - Implausible Signal & P0322 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28) No Signal

Thank you in advance !

Where in the world are you?

One key concern on your early V8 is knowing with 1,000% certainty that the timing belt, tensioners, water pump and thermostat are less than 80,000 miles/5 years old.

The timing belts do break and the engine is toast.

I am in New York. Timing belt was replaced around 120K in 2013 - mileage stopped last year when i bought it around 146K - currently it should be around 160K.

Didn't know that can cause for the speedometer not working?
LOL!

No, the belt is not related to your speedo failing. It was a heads up on maintenance that's often missed on the older V8s.

Notwithstanding that the car''s service history says you need to do the belt, etc, this year at 5 years old.

That is very irresponsible advice.

You may have got away with it.

Others haven't and when the belt goes the engine is toast.

Thank you for all the replies I really appreciate it. Yes definitely want to keep those repairs in mind as when doing the timing or any of those other parts I would most likely get all the parts done.

I don't want to try to get another speedo and go through other troubles unless I am sure that it is the speedo that needs repair and not just the VSS.

Any idea where that would be located on a V8 model ?

Once again thanks for all the replies.

If you are looking for the sensor for vehicle speed it is taken from the ABS sensors in the wheel hubs.

Imagine the transmission was removed from the vehicle and you are looking forward from the rear of the engine. From the center of the crank move to 9 o'clock on the block. The crank position sensor is at that position on the outside of the block. Its secured with a multi head bolt so you can use either a 10mm socket or a 5mm to remove it.
Regular thread and be sure to not pinch to o-ring when installing the new one or you'll have a leak.

Sorry, my bad. At the start of the post and the fault codes listed were for an engine speed sensor.
Vehicle speed sensor is located in the tranny. It is a hall effect sensor that I am pretty sure is replaceable by itself, but I think you have to remove the valve body to get at it.
You really need to use VCDS to monitor the correct measuring block for the sensor output. From memory. Block 002 in transmission will give you the Input & output shaft speed and sensor output voltages.
Output shaft speed is the VSS you speak of. Start there to diagnose.

I keep seeing this conflict where some people say the vehicle speed comes from the wheel speed sensors and others say it come from a sensor inside the transmission. Which is it? Im trying to diagnose a non working speedo / non shifting trans / no vss reading on my live data code scanner and ecm has logged a p0501 code for vss performance. Also a 2004 v8 touareg
