Hi, I have a 2008 R50 and the mirror glass fell off the backing plate recently. Just the glass, the rest of the mirror is undamaged. I have a new mirror unit complete but it's the wrong colour. My question is how do I get the mirror backing plate out of the wrong coloured housing and fit it into the original mirror housing please?
Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide.

I had to replace the glass in my 20 Touareg wing mirror glass last month after it was walloped by a Range Rover, VW quoted me ÂŁ276 for a replacement. After scouring the internet got one for ÂŁ1* including delivery etc.

If you can't find anything in Oz, try this address if its any help. Might be worth a try

Adjust the mirror so it’s all the way up and inward facing. Hook your finger(s) behind the glass and give a quick yet firm tug. It will pop out of the mechanism. To install, place the new mirror glass over the mechanism correctly, and apply form pressure in the centre of the glass, you’ll hear it click/snap into place.

There are plastic trim removal tools you can buy for next to nothing. I've had a set for years, and they've proven invaluable.

My passenger mirror fell off similar to yours. I used an epoxy glue to reattach the mirror to the backing, and it's worked perfectly since. Much cheaper, and faster than waiting for shipping.

Thanks for that. The sad thing for me was that the mirror totally detached itself and smashed on the road below. I had to buy the whole mirror unit complete just to get a new glass bit.

As stated in post #'s 3 or 4.
Problem is on the replacement unit you have has no power to it to move it to get your fingers or a tool behind there to pry it off. If I remember correctly on mine I was able to gently push on one side of the mirror to get it to move in the housing. Then I just gently pried it with my fingers and it popped off.
I had replaced my entire housing unit with one I bought from a junker on Ebay. The original looked like someone clipped it. The mirror was good still and that's how I got if off without power.

Was a glass shop for a new mirror not an option? I had a couple of mirrors break the glass only and I went to a glass shop where they cut a new mirror and stuck it on for a nominal fee.

Doubt they stuck on electrochromic glass.

Your touareg has been ganked at some point. Shoddy “repairs” have been performed in order to save money. The mirrors fold at the black/painted part.
