Every time I started running gear fault comes on. But not all the time. What's this mean? Am I gonna be able to pass Smog in California ?

That's a suspension fault. You'll need to scan the car to figure it out, but often air leaks, compressor issues or valve issues.

Check all 4 height sensor linkage rods at each corner. The ball joints can rust/seize and eventually break. The fronts are very easy to spot through the wheel well.

If it has been 2+ years since you replaced your battery, just do that first to avoid spending $$$ on unnecessary parts.

It won't affect smog.

For the running gear fault, I'd suspect vehicle battery first, then mechanical issues. If it has been 2+ years since you replaced your battery, just do that first to avoid spending $$$ on unnecessary parts.

Or, you can actually do some testing, including get the battery tested to avoid having to spend $$$ on unnecessary parts or batteries.
