My '04 is also in the shop for this MFI error for the second time. They replaced a valve on the last visit but the next day the fault showed up. On Thursday, the Rep told me that their discussion with VW was pointing toward replacing the compressor unit but they were also checking wiring. It's interesting that at first all the Techs that I spoke to thought this was going to be a battery cable problem but now everything points to the air compressor.

As an aside, I picked up a loaner on Wednesday when I dropped the Treg off, and that evening we had a very severe hail storm. The Passat loaner was ballpeen hammered :-({|= . My insurance will cover except the deductible. I should have taken the shuttle home. (Edit 10-9-06) Insurance company gave me a check today for $3,451 for hail damage for the loaner. It will be interesting to see what the dealer has to say about this.

Hi Everyone...I have also been experiencing the "Running Gear Fault" problem, and am now looking at my third trip back to the dealership with my V8 '04 Treg. First time the problem arose, they replaced the stepper motor. No help. Then I discovered this thread--and many thanks to you all--and faxed the dealership all the details. They looked up the TSB listed in the thread, and, after consulting with VW, were instructed to "replace G 291 valve block." The problem seemed to be solved, for about a day, and then reappeared. Can anyone suggest how to proceed from here? Should I insist that the dealer replace the compressor (as mentioned in recent posts)? Thanks (again) for any thoughts, help, etc.

VW will not replace the compressor...only rebuild it with the kit..and that should definetly fix your problem depending on what fault you have in the system. There are two Technical Solutions for this problem.

Self-Leveling Suspension, Error in Multi-Function Display (2010605/6)

43 06 01 Sept. 22, 2006 2010605 Supersedes T.B. Group 43 number 04-01 dated May 11, 2004 due to updated information.

Instrument cluster multi-function display shows an air suspension error message. Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTCs) 00774 - Left Rear Sensor, 00775 - Right Rear Sensor, Left Front Sensor - 00776 or Right Front Sensor - 01769 may be stored in memory.

and #2. (this TSB is for the compressor)

Supersedes 43-05-01, November 15, 2005

Air Suspension, DTC 01772 008 Stored in DTC Memory (2010801/2)

Air suspension Diagnostic Trouble Code 01772 008 “implausible signal of pressure sensor” is stored in memory.

In most cases this DTC is related to a leak in the system.

Vdub Tech...Thanks for the terrific info. I feel better already. My dealership is going the extra mile--actually, about 50 miles of driving--and bringing me a loaner tomorrow when they come to pick up the Treg. I will make sure they have the information you so generously provided. Thanks again--and I'll be sure to let you know the outcome.

The one i worked on last week i had it for 3 days and could not recreate their problem..mostly because my service writer was giving me wrong info. Finally the guy told me it was "SUSPENSION" workshop...not "TRANSMISSION" like i was told.

So finally i brought the vehicle into the shop, and using the air suspension knob put it to XTRA mode, and locked the suspension. I also had to balance the wheels on that car so that took me a good 20 minutes to do. I go to pull it out of the shop, unlock the suspension and finally the Air suspension picture came up with Running gear fault and then i knew exactly what the customers concern was. The fault was for that pressure sensor, so i got the kit on order and i will put it in next week when im back at work.

Site would not allow me to edit my previous post. I received a call on Friday that the truck was repaired after nine days in shop. The dealer ordered a new compressor but VW would not fill the order and requested the dealer to use the rebuild kit on the compressor. The unit was rebuilt and the tech says that the air suspension is working faster and much smoother and there is no running gear fault message. They asked permission to keep the truck over the weekend to put some miles on the truck to ensure the repair fixes the truck this time around. I'm still driving the excessively dimpled Passat.

The air system has only been used for raising and lowering the air suspension. Truck has approximately 28K miles after 27 months of ownership. So far, one replaced battery, one iginition coil and one compressor rebuild.

running gear fault message

it is the air pump or the sensor. No doubt about it. Dealer should know about it because there are hundreds of cars with the same problem, specially the 04's.

Touareg is flooded with little problems like that, all associated to the high tech computers and monitoring devices.
that is why I bought the VW extended insurance up to 7 years or 100K. ( Platinum)
I do not care what happens to the T reg....it will be covered bumper to bumper, including a loaner car.
The day before it expires, I will sell it.

The compressor in mine was finally rebuilt yesterday. All is well so far. They also found two "hard faults" for level sensors and replaced those as well. Only time will tell.

Has anyone noticed if the air-pump works more frequently or remains on for longer if this gremlin appears? My 04 V8 does that, it is at 48k kms (30K miles) and I have frequent brake assist workshop warnings at startup, parking light warnings when no such, and nav system freeze-up. From what I have put together, a typical pump/piston ring failure issue.. I am taking it in 2 days.

I have got a VW touareg 2004 and my problem is that my front air suspension is lower for about 4 cm than the rear suspension and te front suspension didn't have got shock-absorption like it have before. Also sometimes I have got a message fualt running gear and in the vag diagnostic is a code 1 Fault Found:
01780 - Sensor for Vehicle Leveling
003 - Mechanical Failure – Intermittent
Vw dealer has change left and right front level sensors and the front suspension is still lower than the rear and what I noticed whaen I want to put the car to the offroad or xtra level it takes very long time and the icons of the level on the left on the mfi are still blinking.Formerly when I wanted to pull up my car ot takes only a several second and now it takes minutes and it couldn't go up like it could before maybe someone can help me with this problem. Could it be a bad air compressor ?? as was written in the posts before.
Maybe rebiulding the air compressor with the repair
kit Part No: 7L0 698 030 will solve the problem
And if I want to get the suspension to high or offroad level the car couldn't go up or if he does it makes it very slowly but if I want to go to loading level it is written on the mfi: "tank pressure filling" and nothing happens
Thanks for any reply

I have the warning light on all the time, but didn't have any indications of problems until one day my Touareg seemed like I was driving a boat on a rough river. bouncing all over the place. I got to work and it had lowered itself to the lowest level, almost to the tires. When I went back out to look at it, it was back up again. This has happened one other time, but I'm scared to death it will happen when I'm driving at high speeds. Could it be a faulty airpump when it only does it randomly ?

Hi,can you help me please. I just bough a Touareg V6 3.0D 2006. Suspension stays up and light came on "running gear fault". I tryed to move it with control wheel, but nothing happen.I plug in diagnostic scaner and it was 2 fault codes:

01400 Level control fault type 097/references

02250 Function deactivation: valve duty value of resistance too small

Maybe it stays up,because it's very cold in Latvia now -15 C
Thank you.
Sorry about my English.

Well, looks like I get to join the running gear fault workshop ranks. I have it on all the time now with the up and down arrow suspension symbol. Everything works as it should, just have the error message. Problem is service in Germany aint cheap, especially when they see an American coming. Any chance I could do this myself? This didnt happen until I killed the battery and had to get a jump.....maybe I screwed it up.:???:
