I Need Help!!
rookie Touareg owner here. I just got it about two weeks ago from a guy on offer up w/135k miles on it. Drove great during test drive. Since then I’ve put only a few hundred miles on it and now there’s a loud thumping sound coming from the front end of the vehicle. Happens when I accelerate forward only. I mean it’s LOUD. Doesnt make noise if I leave the transmission in park and press the gas, only while driving and it gets louder the faster I go. Doesn’t necessarily matter the smoothness of the road. I notice that if I maneuver it a certain way the thumping goes away for a second then comes back. I just wNt to know what it is so I can get it fixed up ASAP. HELP!

It is the centre bearing on the prop / drive shaft. It is a known issue.
The bearing itself is actually okay but the thin rubber diaphragm that is part of the support within the bearing hanger has torn and the shaft is now banging around a couple of inches so don't drive the car.
You can either spend up to $2,000 at your VW dealer getting a brand new shaft fitted or you can DIY using "The Jimi Fix" for next to nothing.
There are other fixes in between.

1. Check the center bearing first. It is a know problem child and should just be checked anytime you get a thump or vibration in the Touareg.

2. If it is not the center bearing, you will be looking at the shocks and the front and lower control arms. The control arms are another problem child on this vehicle.

3. The lack of location and engine info is the fault of the new forum software. The owners have promised many times to fix it. Yeah, right, sure, you betcha. They are going to fix it any day now. Just keep waiting. It will happen. They are on top of it. It will happen. Any second now... :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

sounds a lot like a bad hanger bearing on the driveshaft... it gets louder over a certain speed and shudders the vehicle some... common trouble at some time. In North America, VW only sells a complete $1400 driveshaft assembly, there may be a reman uniton the edges of the aftermarket, but nothing mainstream vendors. It’s a poor design from the owner’s perspective.

It sounds like the centre bearing on your tail shaft has gone. The tail shaft then vibrates in the bearing housing. The bearing is held in place by a rubber seal which perishes over time. In Australia, VW won't replace just the bearing, they will tell you you need to replace the entire shaft which comes with the bearing in place. This happened to mine. I have a brand new bearing here in Tassie and there is a business in Launceston that can do these replacements. Much much cheaper than the tailshaft replacement.

Centre shaft bearing. Go to the stealership and get rooked for $1500 or so, or buyt a bearing on Bay for $150 and get your local VW mech to install it. I did, it took my bloke exactly one hour to remove the shaft, cut off the old bearing, install the new one and refit the shaft. Total cost was $275.

As other CT members have suggested in this thread this noise and failure is very likely the center bearing supporting the articulated rear drive shaft. This is a widely-known common issue with T1 & T2 VW Touaregs.

There are many 'band-aid fixes' noted in various Internet forums and sources but the only sure fix is to replace the failed rear drive shaft with a new or rebuilt part.

New OE VW drive shaft parts are becoming near unobtainium and are ridiculously expensive when you can find one - e.g. US$900 - US$1,200

As a reasonable alternative solution try a rebuilt-to-new spec drive shaft from Colorado Drive Shaft in Denver, CO. They offer a rebuilt VW Touareg direct replacement rear drive shaft part for US$425 free shipping to the lower 48-states. When you return the failed drive shaft as the core - also free core return shipping - they refund US$50. So, total cost is US$375. Still cheap at twice the price!!

Colorado Drive Shaft has been rebuilding import vehicle drive shafts for over 20 years. They definitely know their stuff! I've used three of their Touareg replacement rear drive shaft parts on three different T1 & T2 Touaregs over the years. Years later all three CDS replacement drive shaft parts are still performing flawlessly.

Here is the URL link to the Colorado Drive Shaft VW Touareg replacement rear drive shaft part - Volkswagen Touareg Rear Drive Shaft

The Touareg rear drive shaft R&R process is simple enough and can be done laying on your back in the driveway with typical hand tools.

Hope this info is helpful.

Best of luck on the repair!
