Hello my fellow Aussie/Kiwi friends. I am currently investigating options for purchasing a set of roof racks for my 7P V8 TDI. We will be travelling for a couple of months next year with the van on the back but I was going to possibly borrow my father in laws rhino rack tray for carrying a full size spare (if I can find one) as well as a couple of other small items, maybe a Gerry can. Has anyone purchased a particular brand and how do you like them. I have been looking at the rhino rack vortex racks and the slimline type that goes between the rails. Another brand I was looking at was whispbar as well.
I am in no rush, hence my investigations prior to purchase. Thanks a lot guys.

Don't have to worry about that as I don't have a sunroof.

Hi, I have a 7P and have fitted it out with Thule Load Bars and a Ring half Roof Rack, this has allowed me to fit a full sized spare + space for the Weber Baby Q and allows for a Thule Bike rack next to the half sized roof rack. Travelled Canberra to far north coast NSW, towing my Kokoda 21' van with no trouble. Liked the Thule as they are easy to fit and seem to work very well for what I needed. The only challenge, is in getting the full sized 20" rim/tyre up onto the roof. As I only need it when towing the van, I have access to a small step ladder. Hope this helps John

Thanks for your post John. I would love to see some photos if you have them. I hadn't really considered Thule. I have mainly been thinking Rhino Rack stuff.

I am using a Rhino Rack 1215 (that's it's code and size) rack on Rhino Rack aero bars. Basically covers the entire roof area of the Treg. The raised rim/rail around the rack allows in conjunction with the eye bolts to secure 2 x 17" tyres with about half of rack tray space available for some other bits. The fun is hoisting up and lowering back down the rim and tyre weight.
Down side is that the surrounding bar/rail, albeit slightly angled for wind drag reduction, is still quite noisy. Then there's the wind vibration of the ratchet straps securing the wheels ....

Hope this info is helpful.

Thanks mate. I would love to see a photo of your setup if you don't mind. I am getting a few conflicting ideas on sizes for the rack. I am considering a pioneer platform now.

G'day
I have in my garage a rhino rack basket and bars that are the correct length to fit to Touareg rails. And I have a pair of mont blanc bars ditto.
They do not fit my current vehicle, so I'd be happy to sell them. You'd have to pickemup at Glenbrook or organise postage.
