Roof rack question

Hi folks, I have a question about the roof rack. My '07 has the newer style rails that run front-to-back and does not have any crossbars. I need the crossbars to mount my good old Sears "snail" (That's a rooftop cargo carrier). Money is most definitely an issue, I'm actually thinking of lashing a couple of 2x4s between the rails so I can mount the snail in true Jed Clampett style! Maybe I'll put a rocker up there for Granny too!

Anyway, what are my options for crossbars? My owner's manual only covers the older style racks, so I don't even know how to remove the ones on my car. It looks like there are some access panels on the inside of the 3 verticle supports so I assume those can be opened somehow to get to the mounting hardware.

Any thoughts appreciated!

Yes, there are access panels on the inside. You need a triple-square tool to release it, then the whole rack bar can lift out. Someone can provide specific details, as I was just an observer to a removal we did at rally.

Underneath the rail is the standard black-colored roof gutter, minus end caps.

You can fit the old-style racks, available through several online Touareg parts sites. Or you can build a new rack using Thule, Yakima, Surco, etc.

Just another note - the old style VW roof rack crossbeams, as stylish as they are, are kinda super-wide. I'd go third-party (Thule, Yakima) to get a more workable system.

anyone still around? I was concerned about this exact issue as the front to back bars are pretty but not so useful to me.

So, is the above saying you can unbolt these from below (inside the car ceiling?) and then mount into the same bolt spots, a yakima "landing pad" style mount?

If so, that would be so perfect!

The unbolting of the rails is done entirely on the outside. Underneath is the old style slider rail, so yes, you can attach a Yack rack or the older style factory racks if you desire.

do you mean the "slider" track is like a slot that would allow free movement/positioning of a yakima landing pad?

I am getting sooo excited ;)
