On the topic of your problem, has the dealer updated the CAN-BUS gateway module to see the head unit and tell the other components that you have this installed in the vehicle?

That coding is by me right after my install of new HU, via VAGCOM.
Dealer did not change a thing. They indicated that it is correct.

Had to go dig up (from spring '09) my notes, and whaddya know - same thing. As best we (me + Svc. Manager + tech) could figure out was that there are just enough differences between the various versions as to render communications impossible. Oddly enough, we swapped HUs (3 different versions) on an '09 Passat w/no issues...

The only suggestion they could come up w/was to try to find an RNS manuf. around the same time as the vehicle...

Are you stating that you were able to get 3 different versions of the 510 to all work in the same vehicle? My dealer seams to think not so. They believe the HU must be the same year of manufacture or very close to.

The tech had a "jury rigged" harness that allowed us to "swap" HUs (remember, the Touareg unit has a "square" faceplate - can't snap into Passat dash) - he had enough experience w/RNS units to rig it for testing prior to installing...
Anyway - it was a Sat. PM, and we had his & my wife's car (both Passats) & the Touareg. Swapped the various HUs around (the wiring harness got a workout), and it seemed that the two Passats were interchangeable (A & B revisions), and surprisingly the Touareg 510 seemed to work (again, jury rigged) in my wife's Passat. Never could get the RNS to talk w/the MFD, so we shrugged our shoulders & I returned the RNS... after a hefty "return & restocking" fee

I don't recall you stating the model and year of your Touareg. Was it a 2009 Comfortline?

Perhaps it has the old enough firmware so the unit and Treg don't communicate properly. I assume this unit does not have the 1042 firmware on board? What firmware version is it running 0382? If not might be the problem.

I have asked Steven to advised on the firmware shipped with HU. So your saying that 0382 & 1042 firmware is the proper firmware for most issues.
Or do you know a way to get the firmware information off the HU?

If you have Vagcom/VCDS open Channel 37 – Navigation, go into adaption and change channel 50 to 1 (will be 0).

To enter the test/setup mode when the RNS 510 is operating press and hold the setup button, keep holding it when the radio menu appears and shortly after the test menu appears . You may need to reboot your unit after coding it but it may be possible a power cycle is enough.

Obviously, try holding the setup button 1st as it "might" already be activated. Once in test mode you can go through the selections and look for the firmware version. I know when I was upgrading my firmware with the VW frimware flash CD 0380 there was a update for the canbus as well. It didn't load on my unit as I have a T1 and this will not interface as it does with your T2 which has 2.0 Can. The flash update available now is still the 0380/82 but new units ship with the coveteted version 1040/42 - You should have the 0380/82 on yours is my guess but it could be older and thus need the update.

Thanks to all that have posted a replied. I have been on the VCDS for the past few days and have fixed a few items. Next I hope to upgrade the firmware and fix the remaining items. I have my fingers crossed.
