Rims for R50

I'm getting my R50 in a few months and according to everyone I'm a nutcase for wanting to take it off road. I live in Australia and you'd be a nutcase if you didn't go off road in my opinion. I'm not looking to get involved in challenging stuff but every now and again I'd like to take a bush track or go on the beach which is going to be near impossible with the standard wheels and low profile tyres. Would anyone be able to suggest rims, steel/alloy, that I can fit to an R50? Since I'm only going to use these whenever I'm going camping or for an off road drive, the cheaper the better and I do realise chances are that it isn't going to be cheap. Dealers have been no help, and neither has VW Australia. I'd like to get the set-up sorted before the car arrives. Golf GTi driver at the moment. Fantastic car but getting a little small for the family.

You are a bit nuts, but I don't think you can go any lower the 18" since I believe that has the 350mm front brakes on it. So you can't go any smaller then that. No known steel wheels available for any of the Tregs. So maybe you can find some OEM 18's someone pulled off to put 22" s on thier Treg for yours.

Welcome. There's been a fair bit of discussion on the Oz part of the site about wheels for the R50. I don't know what the resolution was.

I witnessed Kev lose the first bit of blue from his R50's skirt.

Tyres and wheels will be the only thing that hold you back.

Thanks guys. Where can I find the Oz forum participants? 18's will be too small I think. In the brochure I see you can fit 19's as options to the R50, so I'd say that'd be the smallest. The dealer actually tried to fit standard V10 rims and it didn't fit but I'm not too sure how hard they tried if they did. I'm looking at 20's only because the range of AT tyres are larger that I can fit compared to 19's, but it looks like I'll have to find alloys and forget about steel rims. Ground clearance on an R50 is actually more than that on a Toyota Hilux, so I don't consider myself a complete nut. Maybe half a nut. As long as remember to lift my skirt, I'll be OK.

Choice of tyres are Cooper or Pirelli for 20". Pirelli is the only ones that make AT tyres for 19" that I could find. Can't imagine 18's fitting but I'll test that out. I don't think clearance is going to be a problem unless you're a real idiot. I don't plan on doing worse 4WD'ing than maybe a rutted road. Main thing is that I'll have to go on dirt, mud or sand and the standard issue boots isn't any good for that. I'll post some pictures once I've taken it bush.

At the moment I'm thinking Audi Q7 wheels might be the best option (20"). There are also imported billet alloy wheels, but they have a backspace of only 6" - might poke the wheels out from under the guard.
I think you are correct in that the tyre options for 20" rims are better than for smaller sizes. Also have a look at Procomp A/T - they have two A/T tyres for 20" rims. Toyo OPAT also available.
The limiting factor as far as I can see will be that all those tyres have diameters from 31" to 33", where the standard tyre measures about 29". The larger diameter will be an advantage offroad, but I'm hoping the larger diameter tyre does not foul the inner guard.
And I will leave standard tyres on for the beach. At near normal pressures, I am expecting, becasue the footrint is quite large as it is (very wide) and the low profile tyres could tend to leak at the bead at low pressures.
That's all I know :) or all I think I know, anyway...

Thanks again guys. I've convinced the dealer to allow me to take their next R50 in to a wheels shop to see what is available and what would be the best set-up with wheels as well as tyres. The car is on order so it won't be in the next month or so. If anyone's interested, keep watching this space.

The NZ R50's come with 21inch wheels as standard and to be honest its a pain in the arse. I'm a VW tech and its a nightmare trying to source 21 inch tyres for them as they are such an odd ball size. I'd go for the 19 or 20 inch rims. There will be much more choice for tyre sizes.

R50 wheels

I got the car in January. I haven't sourced wheels yet until I can afford a full set plus spare/s. I'm looking at 20". I found more AT tyres for that size than what I could find for 19". First I need to find a wheel shop with a large selection in stock to take the car in and fit them to make sure it isn't going to cause more issues than what it's worth.

I'm not sure what's available in NZ but over here I've done some research into the 21" tyres. There are offerings from Dunlop, Yokohama, Continental, Pirelli and Michelin. Funny enough the Touaregs in Europe get Michelins as OEM. I'd also get Michelins when I change as they give much better mileage than the Dunlops and are cheaper.

On my R50 I just had to replace my OEM tyres (which were Dunlop) after about 50k+ kilometres, maybe 60k...and I replaced them with Michelin mainly becoz they were available overnight and comparable pricing. We'll see as to wear. Grip is great.
For offroad I have a set of 20" Advanti alloy rims, 8.5" wide. Tyres are Cooper LTZ (an allterrain pattern) 285/50x20. They are the biggest I could fit under the 'guards (I really wanted 285/65), but I still had to massage the vents in the front inner guard with a grinder so they would not rub.
I went with 20" rims because 18" would be a closer fit over the calipers than I was happy with and because 20" tyres are becoming more common and will probably have more options as time goes by (great song).
Works for me, your requirements might be different.

Yep, I got a few qoutes and I actually expected much worse. Also, if you look at prices on the same tyres in the US, they are actually much cheaper. I believe there is room to haggle.

Thanks Kevin, it is great to know that someone else has the same idea as I have and found a solution. I'll also go for 20" but I'll see if I can't find a wheel/tyre combination that doesn't require "massaging" any body work.

I got myself a set of Audi Q7 20" rims off eBay. Got the deal with a set of tyres already fitted for $1800. Done around 15000Km on them already and they'll be due for replacing in a couple of months, but I'll be looking for road tyres not ATR's.

Also keep an eye on the Porsche Car Clubs websites, they often advertise 2nd hand Cayenne wheels and tyres as well.

I don't know about rich R50 folk :D We had a few stimulus packages, with the GFC, thrown at us small businesses and I managed to include an R50 in the mix :p I did check the US prices online and converted back to Aussie $, it is much cheaper. On average the Aussie quotes were about 25% more expensive.

I am currently looking for 20" rims. Quite a few deals around for new Wheels and Tyres $1999.99 tyres are hankooks when I enquire. I am going to buy 5 20 x 9 mags, put TPM's in them and then a set of Cooper 275/45 R20 , or perhaps 285/45 R20 if they are available. Good thing is the later model TPM's are only $90.00 a piece so not to bad to have a set in the off road and road tyres.

Rims

G'day,

Kev11e, do you run you treg in off-road height 24/7 with the new rims? I have a 2010 R50 and want to get some all-terrains for going to vic high country down here. Just purchased after selling highly modified 200 series landcruiser sahara and still have the travel bug. Also maybe for a different thread, I have looked everywhere for a aftermarket exhaust system but none available for the R50 so I just removed rear resonator, no snorkels either and got a tow kit and that seems it for aftermarket. Much appreciated, just joined the forum [no more lcool yay!]

No I just run at normal height until I get to Harrietville or thereabouts; then run at off-road height 24/7 until I get back...and watch that the extra height doesn't disappear...by that, I mean when you have the last bit of height up on the suspension, after you exceed 20km/hr it drops to off-road height automatically. Then you need to twist the dial again. Leaving aside the automatic height drop to normal if you exceed 80Kliks - but it does jump up again when you slow down. Unless you have the lock gadget deployed, in which case you cannot exceed 80kliks. Clear as mud?
I also have an alloy protection plate under the sump and gearbox, and a third battery for the fridge.
So at last count (and not relevant to this thread), there were at least three refugees from Lcool...and I used to have an 80 series.

Well, yes, I run two sets of rims.
The 20" LTZ tyres do rub the front vents in the inner guard but only on lock, and only when the wheels are pushed up in the guard. A small trade-off for increased height, traction, footprint and puncture resistance when offroad.
I swap back to OE tyres and rims when I get back home.
The LTZ tyres are a bit embarrassing in terms of dry bitumen adhesion compared to OE...
