I don't want this to sound like a smart ass remark, but. When you look at it are there less coils on the broken one versus the non broken one?

 

If the spring is broken then you should be able to see that quite clearly so get the garage to show you before they fit the new one.

A broken rear spring is very unlikely, in my view, to have anything to do with the front brake noise.

Did you ask the garage about this?

Brakes aren't rocket science so any competent mechanic should be able to take a look at your pads and rotors and tell you the wear percentage on each corner.

They should also look at the caliper operation to make sure the pistons are all functioning correctly.

Very unlikely indeed....but in fairness, I don't think they are implying it has.

 

If the sensors did not go off on the front brakes I would not worry about changing them until it does. Would be wasted money to change them before imo. I would also think if you have a broken spring you would notice it sitting differently as well as handling weird. I would check it out myself if I were you and go from there.

 

I looked at the right rear wheel but I don't even really see the coil.

 

You need to crawl underneath and have a good look around, lifting the rears on a ramp or on drive onto some timbers (lumber) makes life under there a little better.

It was the OP himself who raised this point as in: "I'm pretty sure my front brake rotors or something feels like it's warped....or do you think that the broken right rear coil spring could have anything to do with what i'm feeling while i'm applying the brakes?" which is why I asked if he had talked to the garage about the noise.

No i just asked for a safety inspection. I'm quite surprised they didn't say anything about the front brakes because I have suspected they were bad for a while and i'm 99% sure that i'm feeling the rotors or something warping because when I am slowing down or stopping with any speed around 30-40km/hr or higher I feel the shaking or cyclic warping feeling in the front rotors. This is supposed to be a volkswagen specialty shop. I would think they could diagnose some warped rotors or bad brakes during a safety inspection. What do you all think of this?

 

They basically said I have to fix the broken right rear coil spring and then it will pass inspection. But if i spend the 600 dollars they are trying to charge me to put in the right rear coil spring and then pass the safety inspection only to have to immediately fix the brakes, which cost around 800 at the vw shop I go to. Do you guys think i'm paying too high for these repairs? I'm talking Canadian dollars here.

European road springs are no longer made as well as they used to be. They sometimes break.

You are trying to connect issues that have no connection!

Go get another price from another VW specialist.

Go get another price from a VW dealer too.

As for the brakes: it is actually quite rare to warp a rotor in normal usage. As I posted earlier, brakes are not rocket science. Get a good brake shop to inspect them and report on wear and caliper operation. Don't start chucking parts at it through making assumptions.

 

Thanks Noobytoogy... I like your advice and you are reasonable. What else could be causing that warping feeling in my front brakes? The brakes have been squeaking for about 10 months as you take your foot off the brake pedal.
Also, one of my biggest concerns is the possibility of having bad differentials (i think this vehicle has 3 of them in it... front, rear, and centre locking one).... If i have let's say a bad rear differential for example.. could it be the cause of the broken right rear coil spring and warping of the brakes... or is any of that a logical thought on my behalf?

I know VW has problems with springs breaking. This is a very common problem. I brought my jetta in and the CSR told me he's never seen a spring break. Sitting on the floor behind him were 4 broken springs... so I asked and he said he didn't know what they were for... (yeah right) But my jetta broke both front springs in it's first 3 years. Interestingly the car sat the same but it did make noises and squeaks and clunks etc. It didn't get worse though. I could see it was broken for myself. I was on the vw vortex site at the time and apparently many VW's have spring breaking issues. I concluded vw makes cheap springs.

I can see why your mechanic wants to change the spring asap. No need to go further until an obvious problem is fixed. Once done you can insist he should take your treg for a test drive and verify the brakes.

 

I had my safety inspection done the other day at a vw auto shop (not the dealer) and they said the only thing I needed to do was replace a broken right rear coil spring.

My question to all of you experts and gurus is .... About 8 weeks ago I was driving/circling around a parking lot with lots of bumps and uneven patches when I heard a loud pop or clunk (which I felt like came from the back end of the vehicle). Shortly after this incident, I started noticing that while pressing the brake I could feel some sort of warping or something catching while the break was being applied.

So before I took my t-reg into the shop for the safety inspection I was thinking that my front brakes were definitely going to need to be replaced. They have been squeaking for quite some time now whenever I am letting my foot off the brake.

Should I trust what this shop is saying? They are saying my vehicle only needs the right rear coil spring to pass a safety inspection... I'm pretty sure my front brake rotors or something feels like it's warped....or do you think that the broken right rear coil spring could have anything to do with what i'm feeling while i'm applying the brakes?

Anyway I have a 2013 Toureg 6v sport and I take it to the dealership to get inspection done n it fail cause they told me the coil spring on the rear broke but I check it my self n it broke, but it seems like these toureg really have issues with broking springs cause I have seen quite a couple people with broken rear coil springs on these toureg.
