What do you think about the sound of this 2008 V8 FSI with a Fabspeed Maxflo system?

.

That is exactly what my system sounds like once it's warm, maybe slightly more aggressive than mine. I think volkswagendude has found the magic formula by replacing the H-pipe with an X-pipe. I have an Xpipe just before the rear resonators which eliminated the flapper sound when the exhaust is at operating temp but I think it would be completely gone with the replacement of the H-Pipe.

I promised a pic of the undercarriage on mine, so you guys can see how my piping is laid out. Sorry I had no time today.

Also slightly reluctant to record a vid from the outside accelerating with mono only recording capability of my phone. I need to borrow a friends recording device, and get some stereo effect happening here  as the phone recording insults the reality of the situation.

Cost of the system?
I don't know. I found the video while searching YouTube. I'm looking for ideas for my V8 FSI and that Fabspeed set-up sounds nice.

Perry, I currently have a stock system on mine right now, as I just recently got this touareg. The previous one I had prior to this had the same setup as vw dude but I had a slightly different x-pipe/mid section. The mid-section I had was in concept the same as the dynomax x-muffler, but the x-pipe was separate and the resonators were also their own entity, much like the image I posted.

IMO, that or the dynomax muffler is the best option if you don't want certain sound characteristics (excessive flapping) associated with louder exhaust setups.

Thanks snooreg, I'm thinking about starting with replacing my stock H pipe with the Dynomax Ultraflow X and seeing how I like the sound then go from there.

If I remember correctly, its's 2.25" pipes right?
.

Good idea...thanks
.

Pipe coming from flex pipe and primary cat, notice original hanger retained

Where my resonated pipes used to reside(relocated where shown 2 pics below)

Pipes from above pic, leading into the Dynomax Utlra Flo X unit(notice original hanger has been retained for structural rigidity)

Pipes leading out of Dynomax Ultra Flo X, and into the relocated resonated by-pass pipes, and notice, no more stock H-Pipe in this vicinity

Pipes leading off to freedom in the back

I was going to post the vid instead of the screenshots but decided nah.

This setup has completely, utterly eliminated any indication of that card in the spoke sound. The 5 Valve 8 cyl now sounds like a gem.

Forgot to mention in the last pic, there is yet AN OTHER x-pipe, neatly integrated between the two small mufflers in the back(hard to see in the image), which is essentially the Leistung setup itself. THAT particular x-pipe, purportedly takes away rasp on the Pepper V8's.

Yes, I now have two x-pipes. One that is the Dynomax Ulta Flo X further upstream, and the x-pipe that is imbedded between the two mufflers on the Leistung Exhaust right towards the end.

I didn't mean it all this way, it just happened :).
It sounds great though!

Thanks for posting the pics volkswagendude. What diameter pipes did you use? I wonder if the T1 has the same exhaust as the T2. I don't seem to have the set of resonators that you relocated behind your Dynomax Ultra Flo X.

I have my secondary cats in the foreground and what I assume is a resonator in the background:

Here is a close up pic of it:

And what is downstream of it:

And finally the mufflers:

I was planning on starting out by replacing that resonator with a Dynomax Ultra Flo X then I might think about bypassing the secondary cats but I'm afraid that would make it too loud.

Perry01, the new tubing was replaced with 2.5 inches, as is the Dynomax Ultra Flo X 2.5 as well. For reference, stock tubing is 2.36 inches in diameter on my 5 valve V8. I'm assuming it is the same on your 4 Valve V8 FSI?

Unless I'm getting careless on my mobile device here, where is your stock H-Pipe located? I do not see it in your pics. However that resonator in your pic comes as a surprise to me! I never knew that the newer 4 valve 07+ V8 FSI engines had an extra resonator!!! I was always under the impression the extra resonator was an early 04 thing, and then VW took it out either for a sportier sound or cost saving. Again, seeing that on your FSI V8 comes as a surprise to me.

Where is the H-pipe located on your application?
I took out my H-Pipe and had the Dynomax Ultra Flo X installed as a replacement to that H-Pipe, albeit it was installed further upstream towards (but not quite at) the center of the vehicle as opposed to the H-pipe which used to be closer to the rear.

Now concerning your observation and question on my two resonators that you see right after the Dynomax, those were relocated from the secondary cat by-pass pipe location. Going back in time, I originally took out my secondary cats, which are approximately in the same location as yours, and had by-pass popes installed. I wasn't happy with the sound, so I ended up installing two puppies you see in the pic instead. But for some reason, the sport exhaust shop elected to relocate those resonated by-pass pipes to the location that you see, which is right behind the Dynomax Ultra Flo X unit.

Whatever it is that they did, holy smokes, what a smooth running V8 sound it is now! You do not hear the two firing 4 cylinder banks anymore, but instead here ONE consistent tight sound. If anything, one might call the sound "too tight!" I call it refined ;). It has a very quality, high tech ring to it when accelerating, and no "*******" or cheap "POS" sound to it. It really befits the vehicle now.

Dude, I've owned this Touareg for over a month and this is the first time I've taken a look under the vehicle at the exhaust. The previous owner had the rear mufflers installed. Maybe he had the stock H pipe removed? I wish I knew what the stock set-up looks like but T2 are rare here especially the V8's. Maybe someone who owns a T2 V8 will chime in.

My early '04 had a resonator in the same place as my '08, I agree that it's odd VW decided to switch back to that set-up.

Maybe I can have my local muffler shop replace the stock resonator with a Dynomax Ultra Flow X which is essentially a resonated X pipe right?
.

^^^^^^^ I too would like to hear some T2 V8 FSI owners chime in concerning your mysterious resonator.

I would go ahead and replace that resonator with the Dynomax Ultra Flo X. This will be your safest bet, in light of the fact you now have no H-Pipe at all!!

So, the proper order would be- pri. Cats, x-flo muffler, resonator sec. Cat delete pipes, mufflers, tail pipes. ?
That is indeed my formula, but it would make me uncomfortable to engrave this in stone as the one and only solution. It does work for my application, so in a sense, you would have nothing to lose but follow my set up. :)
