I was wondering if anyone has removed the muffler on a T3 TDI Touareg? Any performance benefits? Sound? Thanks

It's all sound. It gets loud and sounds exactly like the VR6 motors do.

There are quite a few on YouTube but this guy is my favorite. Keep in mind he's fully deleted, not JUST the rear muffler:

Thats the vast majority of the noise suppression.. straight 3in to stock muffler still sounds mostly stock w/more turbo noises and a lil more grumble.. people have tried gutting it but didnt help much.

I'm planning on replacing mine with a couple of magnaflows or similar, was planning 3in all the way to split then dual 2.5in briefcase mufflers right after the rear diff.. I want it to be more free flowing mostly, stocker is pretty restrictive and I'd like lowest EGT's towing up here in the Rocky Mountains.. but more growl w/no drone would be just swell... hopefully this summer.

Nothing sounds as good as a VR6, but the TDI is pretty damn close..

^Agreed

I'm going the custom magnaflow route myself

Indeed. The biggest restriction is from the turbo to resonator.

Could also go with a muffler pack like this: Amazon.com: Vibrant 10632 StreetPower Oval Muffler: Automotive

I used one of their 3in mufflers on my VR6T build, it sounded great and was very nice quality.. this could potentially save some fabrication costs as it'd use less stainless and be simpler, both outputs would be identical length too.

Good find!! I like that! Any sound clips of your vrt??

Any idea if removing the muffler only will reduce DEF consumption at high elevations and while towing?
Highly doubt it

Muffler Only? Lol no, but yanking the DEF system out and tossing it into the garbage will dramatically reduce your DEF consumption in all conditions.

Dont have any clips with the vibrant muffler on it, just a GHL Fart can and the Vibrant of similar size (18in dual tips, 3in input) was 100x better sounding.. it was not horribly long after I finished building the 4th and most ambitious build I moved into a new house, and a cottonwood tree (now stump) fell on it, broke all windows and crushed roof, the engine/wheels/bbk are fine but not a body panel is undamaged.. :( Still have the car rotting in the back yard under a cover with only 65k miles on odo, been hoping to find a USP Wagon to put it into.. its beyond FWD Capabilities and pushing Haldex's ability to control it.. Fully built top to bottom 12V 3.0L, Broke 450hp to wheels here in Denver with a T4 before I upgraded turbo.. who knows what it was putting out before it got crushed but it was lighting up the tires in all 6 gears.. so I may have gone a bit too far with it.

I would expect it to reduce DEF consumption slightly. NOx is created because the temperature and energy levels inside the cylinder are high enough for atmospheric nitrogen to combine with atmospheric oxygen to for NO and NO2.

Since removal of the back pressure from a muffler results in slightly more power, that means more energy is going to the wheels, and less into heating up the air in the cylinders. Which should correspond with less NOx creation. The NOx sensors will detect this and release less DEF. But your guess is as good as mine as to how much less.

Tentatively I'm changing my answer. It looks like removing the rear muffler alone on the 3.0 TDI could be worth 20-25hp
