Just got back from San Diego and thought I would make some observations. The fuel mileage stinks. I have the V-6, I ran 80 to 85 mph most of the trip and barely got 16.4. I ran a full tank in town and got 15.7. The highway portion was run with cruise control active for most of the time. The power was great , using the manual shift portion when encountering steep hills and long grades. The ride was awesome and just loved being in the car. I had 2 goldens in the back and they were very comfortable and slept great. I received lots of stares from people I was passing or sitting next to in parking lots and stop lites. The a/c ran great as it was 108 going across the desert and had no problem maintaing 74 degrees in side. I really enjoyed the trip and had NO problems , noises, or issues of any kind. I just wish I could get a little closer to the advertised Highway mileage.

slow down !
Have to second this opinion, at least if you want to get near the advertised gas mileage.

At 4500 miles I have 14.1 long term avg. in the MFI, which is pretty much where I've been the whole time. You can check my review about that.

However, the other day I did a little experiment and drove my 'egg at a relatively normal rate of speed on the highway being gentle on the accellerator. I got a whopping 17.1 mpg, and am sure that I could have got more if I went even slower.

Basically to get the advertised MPG you need to drive with a feather touch on the accellerator, travelling at speeds where you can count the wrinkles on the grandma driving next to you.

Allegedly the MPG goes up as the car ages, I haven't noticed it yet though.

The 'egg is a hungry beast and will feast on premium if you drive it like it wants to be driven!

If you drive the speed limit your gas mileage will improve enourmously.

I have the V-8 and when I drive home from San Francisco through the Sierras to Reno, NV I get around 13.4 MPG driving 80-90 mph the whole time.

I did an experiment today and drove the same trip at 65 MPG and got 17.1! What a difference slowing down makes!

Gee, I got 23 mpg on Sunday, avg speed: 70 mph, distance: 65 miles. Price per gallon of fuel: $1.73. Cost of Touareg: $60k. 500 ft-lbs of torque: priceless.
Yeah, its not bad enough you got the cool V10, now you have to rub the gas mileage in our faces, huh?

The loaner car I had left me a bit scared of gas usage. I used a bit under 3/8 of a tank in only ~130 miles. I wasn't specifically trying to be fuel efficient, but I also wasn't driving like I drive my boxster.

Gas Mileage

I took my first trip to the coast and back (only about 300 miles round trip) and drove at sustained speeds of 60-65mph with passing on uphill grades over the coast ranges at 70-75mph. The Touareg started with only 1050 miles on it. I have the roof racks on, use Premium gasoline, no Cruise Control (I prefer to drive) and Air Conditioner on Auto (although it was a cool day). I got 17.5 mpg and was pretty happy with that since I only get 12.5 mpg average during my city hops.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I stand corrected and will keep the speed down if I want to get a bit more mileage. Its still a great vehicle and enjoyed the trip very much. I am also going to Aspen for 2 weeks this comming August and will likely put 2000 miles on it for that trip. Looking forward to the cool mountains.
