Rear wheel drive only?

I have an '04 V8 with 165,000 miles. Is it possible to disconnect the front drive shaft and the two front prop shafts and make the vehicle rear wheel drive only without breaking a seal or screwing up the computer?

I am concerned about my front differential, based on noises on-throttle and engine braking. Driveshaft already replaced and it's not wheel bearings as there is no change in sound while turning. I am not going to sink several thousand $$$ into an '04 with 165,000. I need to get another 30,000-40,000 miles or so. I was thinking if I remove the load from the front differential, it would extend its life.

I haven't checked/changed fluids yet which i plan to do, but if the front differential needs to be replaced, well....

Thinking about it locgically, if you disconnect the front propshaft, the center diff will let all the torque "follow the path of least resistance", i.e. the front transfer case flange will spin (same effect as lifting one wheel on an axle with an open differential) and you will go no where.

But... The Treg's center diff has an auto locking function in high range which means it'll start locking up as soon as it detects unwanted slip and this is where your problem lies. You'll be constantly "riding" the stepper motor on the diff lock as it tries to cope with the difference in demand from the front and rear propshafts.

Best case is you'd probably end up with a constant "Running Gear Fault - Workshop" warning, but I can't see it being very good for the transfer case / stepper motor.

So unless you drive it in low range only with the center diff permanently locked, I won't disconnect the front propshaft.

When you go to sleep tonight................maybe dream about a TDI? You can still run AWD and get low consumption. Not sure about the merits of doing what you are thinking............the engineering boffins in VW HQ land (Wolfsburg) would surely keel over in horror! Remember Murphy - he'll be watching if you do it. AndrieK - wise words!

Start looking for a new front diff

2wd's not going to happen, unless you lock the center diff. It's only programmed to lock when in 4 Low, unless you can find a way to lock it (grounding some wire, powering a lock solenoid, engaging the lock motor then disconnecting it, etc.). The other option, like the Subarus that get set up for RWD drifting, is to weld the center diff, or make a center diff spool. I'd bet a shiny nickel that these two options would cost you way more time and money than a new front differential. Perhaps you can find one on ebay or at a local wrecking yard, or someone on here has wrecked a Touareg and is parting it out. I think they're all the same for v6/v8/v10, there's no locker option or different ratios. I'm sure someone else can confirm.

Nope... Quick check reveals 41 different front diffs used accross the range. Two different connecting flange sizes and at least 8 different ratio's. At least 8 of the 41 were used on the V8.

That's globally, right?
My guess is that some of those P/N's are supercessions, some are configurations not available in the US (R5, W12, etc.)
I'd bet the port injected V8's are interchangeable, possibly others as well. The diesels probably have numerically lower ratios (taller).
Is there any possiblility of rebuilding your front diff?

smallblock you are correct. This is globally. Like I said, I can only find 8 that were used on the V8, and it is definitely possible that even some of these were supercessions. I'm pretty sure if you look for a V8 front diff specifically, chances are you'd get what you want without too much hassle. Just don't think you can put a V10 diff in a V8 without doing some research first.

The diff is built by ZF. I enquired a while back at the local ZF service center if they can rebuild the diff. They said no. They'll only be able to supply a complete unit.

But you'd probably be able to get it for a lot less money from ZF than going to a VW dealer, so that is also an option.

hi i have touareg 7l 2003 3.2. there was a failure of the front differential and so I rebuilt it to rwd. I welded the center diff, everything is fully functional and the reduction and locking of the rear diff, but only until the rear axle slips and the PC throws out a 4x4 drive error. my question is there is a way to change in pc system abs so as not to throw out this error and think it is rwd. when I pull the key out of the switch box and start again the error does not report
