Rear spoiler fitting

Evening all,

Well, I broke down and got a rear spoiler from ECS. The price was so good I couldn't pass on it. I've got my son lined up for the paint and finishing and I'm considering my attachment options. I've seen the bonding adhesive that ECS sells but I've had good luck using the 3M VHB bonding tape. I'd like to use the 3M tape because if I really want to remove the spoiler later, I can. I thought I'd poll the forum a bit and see if there's any strong reasons for one over the other.

Thanks and cheers!

3M tape works just fine, as long as you prep BOTH surfaces properly before you stick it on. Normally, I'd just say give it a good clean with something alcohol based that's not too aggressive, but in this case, I'd recommend you speak to someone at 3M, or maybe a 3M dealer/distributor about "adhesive promoters".

Thanks guys. I checked out the DAR website and I'll probably add the RTV silicone as they recommend as a "feel good" thing. I've used the tape for industrial applications and it had all kinds of holding power. In fact I think it'll be superior than the glue since the foam will give a bit when the fin and hatch expand and shrink with temperature changes. I'll dig deeper into a primer fluid. I recall seeing that on the 3M website. So, tape it is.

Yup....mines the Votex part too. No need to remove anything so it's an easy mod to do in the garage. Just stick 'er on. My son and I checked the fit and it's perfect. Now off to the paint shop.

As an additional source, check with your local VW dealer, in case they can give you that spoiler at clearance price. I bought mine from a member on here EmichVWParts, that was even cheaper than the above ECStuning link by about $7.00. We are almost talking pocket change at that initial price level. Ultimately, it will boil down to transport costs to your house between the two, and probably the most important thing, customer service, which I do believe both ECStuning and EmichVWparts are both good at ;) So it's your call really.

Going back to the OP question, even though I bought mine a few weeks ago, I will FINALLY be installing it using the supplied double sided tape this week! I can't wait

I will report back if any problems arise using the double sided tape method for adhesion. If I don't report back, it means all is well.

Ya, just give me a couple more days at most. It is time consuming, meaning that when I actually sit down to give you the mod list, it also means that in all likelyhood, I will be making my official For Sale parts list(feeler), as I've decided that I will part the it out, but first need to see what interest it gathers.

And to keep this thread on topic....i will post fitting pics before all of it goes to paint.
they also have the OEM guards for mad cheap....($35 front $35 rear). i could mod the rear easy to accept PDC but I dont know if it would look good with my current setup.

I did the online chat with ECS, and I was told the front they offer will not work with the front PDC, I was disappointed, I thought it looked really good., and for $35, why not? Anyone have it fitted over PDC? I thought it looked like it sat just below the sensors.

fwiw - check with your local vw dealer prior to purchasing through ECS. i sourced mine for $32 per, and no shipping - shipping was what made me think twice about going through ECS, but they are oversize and in the end still a bargain for the parts.

Well I just bought each piece front and rear guard for 39 plus tax....so like 90 bucks total. It will be here Saturday. I will put it on and see how it looks. I have PDC but if I like it...I will mod it and it will look oem. Pics when it happens...

Alright, you ASKED FOR IT! These iPhone pictures leave much to be desired, probably the worst artistically on this site. "Tempos"(car tents used for the winter months) are not the prettiest. I still refused to wash it, even though I wrote what I wrote to Yeti, so I didn't take pictures of the whole vehicle in a nice location or anything like that. Only the part that concerns us for this thread ;), minus the teaser pics of the mags that I will be installing either tomorrow, or early next week time permitting. Then I'll wash it, perhaps even wax it, and start a new thread elsewhere.

Basically, one can see in a nutshell, all the exterior mods that I have done to my egg, which involved only the rear of the vehicle. T2 tails, Votex rear wing spoiler, and the mags to come. The chrome tube side steps came included with the Egg when I bought it, they are truly growing on me. At least I think they are.

Coming back to the rear upper wing spoiler, the fit and finish is not too bad at all. For $37, you are laughing. It's more a question of fitting it on right than anything else, and even mine is not 100%, but quite close I think. It is a MUCH better fitting spoiler than some of the other replicas. The disaster stories one reads from a few years ago on this forum, with some of those once upon a time aftermarket replicas that thankfully, are not produced anymore.

Thanks! :D

I'll post some pics of them installed in a new thread next week, where everyone can give their yah, or nays. Weather permitting and if all goes to plan on my schedule, since my mini vacation ends this Sunday. :(

So let me see what I have ordered. Should be on my doorstepp when I get home. Fr/Rr bumper guards, H&R springs, spoiler, fender flares, FK badgeless grill, eyelids, and snowboard rack. Damn....:p

They are at "clearance" from VW, so most if not all VW dealers should be participating with that price, as wchane pointed out with an example of one, I would think. Even here in Canada, they are in the two digit range, but still at a significantly higher echelon scale numerically. With the dollar always hovering at par, and using any shipping discounts that one could find,, it was well worth it for me to order from "down south." Mine came from Emich VW parts who is a member on here, and can be found in the commercial classifieds, if you want to do the online thing.

BTW going back to the OT original poster, the LORD Fusor 180 clear double-sided tape that was used seems to have bonded so well, that
even if I wanted to pull that sucker off now, it would be an ordeal. No reason to ever have to use any other type of adhesives from a tube or bottle to supplement. Prepping the surface is the key.
