Hi guys,

Quick question. I m getting the fault..... 01217 - Side Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N199)
001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - MIL ON

After researching the code, I checked the connector under the seat and the connector has been repaired once already. All the connections under there look ok. ( I haven't pulled the seat yet). So is there anything else I should be looking for? Any help is appreciated

Don't pull the seat out. You remove two bolts near the base in the front and remove two plastic pieces from the tracks in the rear. The seat then hinges back toward the back seat. You will need a 10 mm triple square bit to remove the two bolts. This will allow you to check the connections with out removing the seat possibly causing more damage.

I can't say, not something I have ever had to deal with. So I can't advise you on this at all. It may be something you want to run by a dealer or a good indy shop.

Hey i had the same issue as you,
Got the code, clearing it only made it come back
At the next startup. Then i checked the vw tsb for the repair and the connector was already removed, but to my surprise vw did a pretty poor repair

What i did was cut away those splice connectors used a higher gauge cable than one original to make it a little longer from the sections i cut. Then used solder to make connections perfect, some shrink tubes and tie wraps. Voila :) no need to change the airbag.

Just got the air bag fault. Are the connectors under the driver's seat on a T2?

My wife was driving the Touareg today and called me with the news that the air bag light is illuminated near the speedometer. She also said the "passenger airbag off" light near the A/C controls was also illuminated even though my son was in the passenger seat. I'll run a VCDS scan when I get home tomorrow to see what fault code is stored.

Well the fault code was:

1 Fault Found: 00591 - Seat Belt Switch; Driver (E24)
008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent - MIL ON

This is what ROSS TECH WIKI says:

00591 - Seat Belt Switch; Driver (E24): Resistance too High
Possible Symptoms Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) active
Possible Causes Wiring/Connectors from/to Seat Belt Switch; Driver (E24)
faulty Seat Belt Switch; Driver (E24) faulty Seat Belt Microswitch (F140) faulty
Possible Solutions Check Wiring/Connectors from/to Seat Belt Switch; Driver (E24)
Check Seat Belt Switch; Driver (E24) Check Seat Belt Microswitch (F140)
Check Measuring Value Blocks (MVB)

I cleared the code and drove a few miles and the warning and indicator didn't return.

Does anyone know where the seatbelt switch and/or seatbelt microswitch is located?

Oh, and the measuring block shows "yes" when buckle inserted and "no" when released so the receptacle recognizes the buckle. At least for now.

Although it's almost 6 years old, it only has 20k miles and I'm the main driver so the seat doesn't move much.

I took a look under the passenger seat and didn't see a yellow connector box. I'll take a closer look later today.

I wonder if I call my local VW dealer they will know if the TSP for the airbag wire was addressed?

You shouldn't be getting this on a '10. Was just an issue on the 04 V8 due to a wire harness being too short. The TSB was only for that year. If you in fact do have this year change what year Touareg you have in your sig since it makes things very confusing.

Looking at the yellow connector will tell you nothing!

The wires have pulled apart inside it

Extend the wiring.

Clear the code.

Was the seat pulled out since you have owned it? If so someone did not just tilt it back but rather took out all four bolts and probably screwed up the plug before it was unplugged. Only thing it can be since this was not an issue after 04. I'd say the plug got messed up somehow.

So many post of faulty buckl switch. Simply VW has faulty buckle switches. I have asked local mechanic working for Dealer and he said that most of the vw cars at some point are returning to garage with this issue. Its ignorance of vw that they are selling 150$ a part which should work 100years but instead just few.
Anyway i have tried to fing if it is possible to tell airbag unit do discard driverside switch signal and assume it to be true. But havent found anything. So the best way is to cut the connector and solder resistor.
If the buckle mechanism if not broken then o don't advise to open it . Becaise it will never close the same way it supppre to.
