Sorry if this is not the right forum (since it says exterior mods), but there is not one for interior mods and I do plan on doing a few changes to the exterior.

Anyway, with the disclaimer out of the way, I dabble, in carbon fiber. I have done as side projects more than 2 dozen cars now. When I bought my T-Reg a few months ago, I thought it screamed CF for the interior, especially with the nice aluminum trim surrounding the wood trim. So I decided to do what I always do to my vehicles...add real CF trim to the inside. I read a lot about how to take the trim pieces out and to be honest it wasn't as hard as I was expecting or read about, but was still way more difficult than any other vehicle I have owned.

I just love the look of CF and the depth it brings to the interior and I feel it is a lot more luxurious than wood trim. I usually use a 2x2 twill on my car, but this time I wanted to do something different...a 1x1 plain weave. Here are examples of each if you are not sure what is what.

Sorry for the bad pics...all of these pics were taken with a bad cell phone (my wife has our good Camera out of town)

I started with the center console pieces, 4 in total, ashtray cover, gear shift trim, cup holder trim, and my favorite piece the gear shift select knob trim. Here are some in progress pics as I was doing them and a few finished pics before reinstall in the T-Reg. I love the 1x1 look on this vehicle. Let me know what you think, good bad or indifferent. Hope you enjoy...

And lastly the gear shift selector small trim piece (worst picture ever!)

The best picture is of the ashtray cover since I took it outside with natural sunlight...it is showing the reflectiveness of the CF best. Hope you enjoyed...thanks for looking :D

Wow - that's looks pretty sweet! Can't wait to see pics once those are all installed.

Thanks, I installed the gear shift small piece today and the cup holder trim piece. They look great. I am painting the chrome ring around the gear shift bezel a gloss black. The chrome was just too gaudy with the CF. This should flow much better. i will post some pics when I get these 4 pieces installed and more of the door/dash pieces as I work on them.

That is sexy!
Thanks John...I thought you might like to see them. :D

Got a chance to work on the remaining pieces this evening...I put the 3rd coat of resin on...starting to get the 3D effect and wet look...well they are still wet. :D They are going to look awesome when finished! I should have all 4 center console pieces installed by the end of the week. I painted the chrom gear shift bezel gloss black...and I am going to clear coat it tomorrow...I will post pics when I am finished with them.

Here is one of the dash trim pieces near the steering wheel...

Thanks...You should do it. It makes the entire interior look so much better, IMO.

Finally getting some installed pics...Finished the center console section. Painted the chrome bezel around the gear shift with a gloss black lacquer and 2 coats of automotive clear coat. I think the gloss bezel look great and much more updated than the chrome ring. i also painted the chrome on the ashtray cover.

I've been waiting for these pics - looks fantastic - good call on painting that trim around the shifter gloss black.

Thanks Josh, I appreciate it. I think everything looks great. I can't wait to finish the other trim pieces. I put the 4th coat of resin on the other trim pieces last night. They are drying right now. I should be ready to start finishing those this weekend...hope to have them installed next week as well.

Yeah I debated between gloss black and matte black on the bezel, but I also like Piano finishes and thought this would be a nice touch. I think I am going to paint the mirror switch knob gloss black too.

Post some pics of the doors and dash when you got those in!!

I definitely will. It turned cooler here last night, which slows the dry time tremendously...so i wasn't able to do anything with it today. this weekend I will work more though.

Out of curiosity, what would you charge a customer to do the same thing in their T1?
I hate to be vague, but that is a great question...I have had several people PM me and ask and I am having a hard time coming up with a price. If someone sent me their trim, I could do it for a lot less than if I have to buy trim. I just looked at TReg trim and it isn't cheap. It is a lot more expensive than BMW trim I work with normally. I would say if someone is really interested to PM me and maybe we can work something out.

So this is all wet carbon fiber I assume? I saw some tutorials about dry carbon fiber and it seems like a very involved process. I intend to start with wet CF and if I ever get good at it, the plan is to look into dry CF.

Also, you interior pics are awesome!

Thank you very much. I really like this 1x1 weave. I am working on some CF accent pieces for someone now that is using a silver/black reflective CF, it is awesome looking. I am doing his paddle shifters, SW trim, key fob trim, and light switch trim on a BMW 3 series.

This is wet CF look, which I think looks better on interior trim. I am not a big fan of the dry ecept on exhaust tips. It is all a very involved labor intensive process...many hours of sanding and coating and what not...also some tricks I have learned through trial and error.

good luck when you try it...in time every piece you do will get better.

Here are a few more pictures and another installed picture of the pass front door. Hopefully the weather will cooperate soon, so I can finish clear coating them. can't do it in the rain very well. The moisture can ruin a good clear coat.

The picture of the key fob trim is super close and you can see how deep the shine is and how crazy the pattern is up close. The upper left quadrant is the true pattern, but I thought this was a cool picture because of the glossy look. Next pictures should be of fully installed CF trim!

Passenger Door Trim. Even in the rain without sun, it is nice and reflective. I think next to the aluminum, they look best for the contrast of CF and aluminum.

Thanks, i appreciate it. I really enjoy the look of it. I have all the pieces installed except for the dash piece. i just have been busy and should have it installed in a few days. I will get some installed finished pictures by the weekend. :D

Thank you very much. I use a 2 part resin that I buy from the same place I buy my carbon fiber from. Minimum amount to buy is 1 gallon I think from this place. When buying just make sure you ask them if it is crystal clear. There are some out there that have a little darker tint to it. Part B will be darker than part A but it should dry clear.

I used this article to help me with the center console pieces. And the others, I used this thread from Club Touareg. You will have to remove your door panels, but it isn't that difficult. The aluminum trim around each piece of wood comes off then you can get the wood out. Install the aluminum back along with the door panels. The wood, now CF pieces can be snapped back in without removing the door panels. So you only have to do it once. good luck!

I buy a gallon at a time and all it says is 2 part resin...doesn't have a brand name or anything on it. I know the place I buy mine from buys it in drums and repackages it.

You can go to carbonmods.co.uk and look at what they have...that may help.

Nice work OP.

I'm sure that Matt at oCarbon can hook us Touareg owners up. He will be redoing my wood trim to carbon for $550 at some point for my S4.

I've seen their work in person and it looks fantastic.

Their FB gallery is amazing.

No affiliation, I just think they do the best work for a great price and wanted to share.

nice looking grille! :D

I am doing another set of trim right now...it is hard finding all the interior trim. I have it all tracked down and waiting on one final part to be delivered so I can finish. i did this one in 2x2 twill...more of what people are used to seeing. Here is a pic of the main 7 pieces...excuse the bad picture and smudges from my hands...

Just finished another set...can't decide if I like the 2x2 weave or 1x1 weave better...

If the center console piece and the hole for push button start I would buy that set off of you! :)

#35 ·
It is highly possible I could put that hole in myself once I removed the current one and use it for a template. I think I asked you before, what would you charge for a set?

#36 ·
I will shoot you over a PM in a few minutes. I took a look at the center console piece and it is marked with a circle on the back. I "assume" that is where the push button start goes. Looks to be about 1 3/8" in diameter. A hole saw would probably work if the hole is a standard size.

#37 ·
wow... i'm in awe at how nice this is. may take the pieces off and send them to you vs having my friend piano black them.

shoot me a pm on price for a 11' trim upgrade? ;)

Thanks...I am actually finishing up a set for a 2012 TReg right now for a board member. I will post pics when I finish polishing them later today or tomorrow. I will also send you a PM. Thanks
