Power seat upgrade

In the process of making the front passenger seat powered. My T2 specs were power driver seat but manual passenger seat.
Found and pulled a power passenger seat with wirings from the yard. Moved over my leather and foam because I prefer mine.
Now in the process of testing which wire is which. Bought wiring diagram from erwin.vw.com which is confusing to me. I can report that at least I got the power seat to work on a 30a fuse.

Now to figure out the other wires. Memory seats tie into steering position and rear view mirror I think. That seems complicated especially when factory wiring is non-existent in my T2. I will not wire that module. Exciting!!!

Anyone has done this swap with memory seat before in T1/T2?

A few have done it. Below is one thread in the link where a little info on wiring is given.
There is a member on here that is very knowledgeable on wiring, although I don't know to what extent on power seats. @chewblekka might be able to help but I guarantee nothing.

Thank you! I did come across that thread but it was not useful to me as there is a major difference.

It seems the wiring in that thread was for a power seat without memory module. So that alone means the wiring is different in that with mine having a memory module where all the control happens through it. I will wire up a couple of wires but not all as I won't tie into steering or rear view. Also, the plug on that thread said it was only missing wires in location 1 and 3 whereas my OEM plug is missing 1, 3, 5 and 7. Although I have a new plug that came with the donor, I still have to figure out why my specs is without the 5 and 7 and where to even tie those to. Trust me I tried hard to refrain from asking for help and searching high and low first 😔

The passenger memory functions have ZERO connection to the drivers memory seat/mirrors/steering column (why would they?).

Could you post the wiring diagrams that you have? In theory, for the power seat to work all you'd need to connect is a 30A power and ground. You'll already have the heated seat and SRS wiring there. Could you also post closer pic of your vehicle wiring plugs, and those that are under your new seat? For full integration you can connect the CAN wires to the splice at the A-pillar connector for the door module.

That’s diagram for the drivers seat.

On the 10-Pin connector, I believe 1 is (+) which I will run to the passenger fuse box on the 30a from testing it. 3 is a can wire.
What I am not sure of are the 5 and 7. I need to do homework on them 🤔

On the 16-Pin connector, My guess is that 2 and 5 are (+) while 1, 3 and 5 are (-). All are wiring for the up/down seatbelt height adjustment motor, which isn't a spec in my T2 so I will ignore. All good with this connector.

If you run a fused 30A wire from the passenger fuse box position 24 to pin 2 of your existing black 10 pin connector, the seat power functions will be operational, as should the memory functions. If you connect pin 3 (CAN-hi) and pin 4 (CAN-low) to the junction point at the A-pillar, you'll have diagnostic capability of the seat.

Pin5 and 7 have to do with the heated seats.

On the 16 pin connector, pins 1,2,3,5,7 are for the seatbelt height adjustment. 1 and 7 are for the motor (variable polarity related to direction), 2,3,5 are for the position sensor (memory).

Thanks Chewblekka for the insight! I can see why a dealership would shy away from this conversion now.

The junction point for the CAN wires at the A-pillar would be in the passenger footwell area right by the glovebox area or would it be up higher than that? I will look at diagrams to see what color wires I am looking there for the high and low.

The new Pin 5 and 7 being wires for heated seats, I need to figure out. My original manual seat had heated seat but the original 10-pin plug did not have 5 and 7. Not sure if I need to splice/tie my original heated seat wires with the new 5 and 7. That's something I will figure out. I don't mind trials.

Closing this thread. I finished the upgrade. Full functionality of the seat and heater. By the way, I didn't need to do anything for the seat heater wiring. I found out via testing that it was pin 8 (+) and pin 2 (-) for the seat heater. That was what my factory pins were so it was really just a plug and play for the heater portion.

Thanks to all who contributed!

Anyone into BMWs would probably love M539Restorations channel on YouTube. Sreten is brilliant at restoring broken BMWs. And the way he does it would put 99 percent of mechanics to shame, IMHO.
