Do the plastic engine covers serve any purpose other than making the engine compartment look tidy?

No, but the cover over my V6 TDI looks better then the mess it covers up. Not very tidy at all under that cover.

Purely looks. Nothing else at all on the V6 and V8 gassers.

The noise reduction is probably measurable even if not actually noticeable. The TDI might get a little more noise suppression since the entire engine is covered, at least on the V6.

Seeing what's actually under those covers is disturbing! Put them back on! ;)

I doubt it adds to sound deadening at all. Just covers up the cluster underneith it since it looks really bad.

It doesn't on the V6 and V8. They've actually been thrown away on some older Touaregs and mine are currently in the boot/trunk as I have been fiddling with my headlights so I can vouch for the fact there is no difference in engine noise in the cabin!

I've never inspected the engine covers on any Tdi engine. There they may be may thicker for sound deadening purposes.

The V6 TDIs also have a sound deadening material under the engine cover. new V6 TDIs are really quiet, I find the pump makes more noise than the engine

I'm just not sure how much sound proofing 1/16th to 1/8th inch plastic (without acoustic/vibration absorbing material) can provide.
Really? A ton! When installing a new plug for my 2002 F250 Diesel 4x4 I pulled out the fender well. I heard the truck run with and without the fender wells huge difference. And like all the guys are saying most have a deadening fabric on the back. Those covers all tough miniscule take away noise from valves and lifters. Think about how thin the stuff is that they use for the floor of a cab or door panel is when restoring older vehicles. a lot of men get lost when they are taken in for service.

Well, just removed them and took a 300 mile trip. Didn't notice a lick of difference.

Now, the next question is, should I put some sound deadening material on the underside of those things and see if that makes a difference.

Anybody know where to get any?

Ahh, a cunning linguist.

Couldn't see the link because I'm on a crappy community computer at work, but make sure it is fire proof. Years ago, a mechanic apparently left a cloth or rag on top of the engine in my Mustang and the heat caused it to catch on fire. Pretty nasty.
